Anyone know of a good class one can take on wild edibles and safe mushrooms? I'm sorely lacking in these 'skills' and never learned these from my grandparents/parents.

Hmmm...eating something called 'wolf farts' certainly sounds appetizing. LOL

If you split a persimmon seed flat ways it'll tell you what kind of winter gonna have

    Youtube is mostly free.

Adam Harritan has lots of videos and he does offer classes at "Learn Your Land"

Yep. But if I'm gonna eat something I just pick up, I would prefer 'hands on' instruction.

I seriously doubt you find much in the way of a mushroom class in Ky... Good luck.

If Irvine, KY is nearby, you could learn a bit there during their mountain mushroom festivals, and outside of that there are always mushroom forages, where people congregate and hunt; you simply search for them online.

Start with oysters, puffballs, lions mane, and morels. You can learn their look a-likes pretty easy.

Oyster looks a-likes. Dont eat the jack o lantern. https://curativemushrooms.com/7-types-of-oyster-mushrooms-3-poisonous-look-alikes
Plus the angel wing that only grows on conifers (pine trees). Dont eat an oyster on a pine tree, it aint an oyster.
    https://gallowaywildfoods.com/oyster-mushroom-edibility-identification-distribution/

puffballs look like Misshaped softballs or volley balls mistaken id occurs with small young specimens.

theres u bunch of info to look up on false morels, also easy to id with a little research.

once the confidence is there learn a new one one at a time with a bunch of research. Find but do not eat until you have found them and their look a-likes many times and figure out the differences.

Theres only a handful of mushrooms i would eat. Hope to slowly expand my list but wont without hands on experience like you mention. I have zero interest in eating any edible mushroom that even remotely resembles a destroying angel or a deathcap.

I found, what I think, were a bunch of 'puffballs' in Kroger. So I picked them. They're pretty good.
