Anyone else heading West to Elk hunt this year? In 3 weeks I'll be heading to Colorado for Muzzleloader season. We've been to this area 2 other times. Needless to say I'm fired up.
Not this year...but I'm heading out 1st week in Sept. with a couple of buddy's next year. I can't hardly wait...
16c This being my first elk hunt I posted the question earlier in the summer about what to take. I got lot's of great information and you gave me some of the best. Thank You! http://www.kentuckyhunting.net/forums/showthread.php?147097-First-time-Elk-Hunt-and-need-help-on-gear-to-take
Lots of good advice from those guys on that thread. I'm going to give you a couple of other things to consider... we wear gaiters over our boots (even when it hasn't snowed) to keep moisture off our pants from leaching into other layers, socks, boots. I love my Meindl boots, just bought a 2nd pair of Perfekts as a backup pair. if your feet sweat get high quality socks (high in wool) for wicking ablility, I change my socks every day at lunch to avoid blisters (moisture=blisters) so let your feet air out while you break midday (over the years I have accumulated several pairs, I've changed to Light Hikers for the archery/muzzleloader seasons). Excellent quality packable raingear is a must as others said but also a couple of disposable poncho's are nice if it's really wet (2 years ago it rained on us 9 of 11 days). replace all alkaline batteries with ultimate lithiums, you won't have to have as many spares. headlamp with red or green LED is needed. your guide will probably provide filtered water for you but check. We do drop camps so we're on our own..
Three of us went public land DIY and all three of us filled our archery bull tags. Will post pics in a couple of days
