I just got into handgun hunting this year. Okay thats not true but this year is my most recent year of hunting with a handgun. Last time I hunted with a handguns was in 1992 so its been a while. Any way I am back in the game of varmit hunting with hand guns also. I was wondering how many others members on the forum use a handgun to hunt with. And if it is not to intruding of me could you tell us the best shoot you made while varmit hunting. My best shot was with a 357 mag with a 6 inch barrel iron sights and I killed one coyote at a distance of 400 yards. Thanks Handloader GOD BLESS US ALL GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
No I am very serious about the shot it was witneses by 2 close friends. Also reamber that at this time I was practicing every day at distances of 500 yards with that same 357 mag. It can be done it just takes a little bit of skill and alot of good quality handloads. My daily practice was 300 rounds of my cuestom mags. And for pictures I will have to look through my albums to find the photo the kill was made in the 1980 -1981 sometime in Arizona desert.
We've all had those shots that are hail mary, angel in the outfield, far out shooting. I won't cry foul too much. But 400 yards is a long, long, shot. The front sight would dwarf anything out in the distance. A movement of a hair at your hand would throw the shot off by feet, not to mention with the mortar trajectory.
Hell, I'd drive to wherever you were to see a 400 yard shot with a .357 Mag off of a bench. That would be something to see. I think you're right phillip, this must be blood and guts relative.
It has to be. 400 yards on a yote with a 357 mag 6 inch barrel and iron sights... Yep sounds even more STUPID when I type it out!!!!!!!!
I respect your opions but was it not my hero Elmer Keith thaat once made a 600 yard shot on and deer and killed the animal. He was using a 44 mag heavy bullet going about the same pace as a 357mag. How could it be? Maybe some people have more skills than overs. Some such as elmer Keith. Just because it is a 357 dose not mean it will not reach out there like its other brother. The 44 and 41 mag.
Well than put your skills on display. If you are so much more talented than the rest of us, why not show it off? I'd say we could get several forum members together that would like to see you make a similar 400 yard shot. Why kind of .357 Mag was it? I had a Ruger Blackhawk .357Mag and it was accurate indeed. Would I ever make a public claim that I made a 400 yard shot, let alone in a hunting situation? No.
What is so hard to believe. Here is my load for the 357 mag CCI 500 SP primers 14.8 gtains of 2400. The velocity of this load is 1,259 fps.cci500240014.8 And the 44 mag load is a CCI 300 primer 2400 24 grains traveling at 1540 fps Like you say I can proably pull this shot off any day of the week with practice. As I said I stopped handgun hunting in 1992 due to the job and family matters. So it has been 17 years sent I fired a round at a distance over 50 yards. But I'll tell you what I will do. I will get the old RUGER SECURITY SIX out and practice with it some for say about 2 months so I can get my skill leval back to where it was and we'll see if I can not put on a demostration.
Im not saying its impossible but has to be a darn lucky shot period. what type of reloads were you using? I can hit fairly well at rocks 100 yds away with my Norinco 45 when I can see the big bullets drop.
Why is it the lower number of posts = the biggest and most outlandish claims? I'm sure theres a name for it.
