Up the holler
This time next weekend, Ill be sitting on the front porch of the cabin taking in the beautiful scenery and crisp air. I cant wait. Its my first trip up there, an I have a dog that I know is just gonna turn on in Wisconsin. She has shown ALOT of promise this summer, despite her hot/cold streaks last season. Ill leave updates every day or so to let everyone know what they can look foward to when they make their journey. Good luck up there Grouser! Let us know how you are doing.

I'll give you an H&R singleshot and 75 dollars for her. That's my last offer and it's only on the table for today.

Grouser called me last night with his results from the first day. Said he got up around 25 birds, with 3 taken home. Most leaves were still green, but some of the maple were falling/turning. He said the birds were real jumpy yesterday, with most of them being in trees because of the high wind. They had a big frost yesterday morning, with wind and rain in the forecast so them leaves should be coming off soon. Ill give you guys details again when I hear from him.

The weather site says the Northwoods of Wisconsin woke up to 23 degree temps one morning this week. Bad weather and wind the next couple days should give those leaves a push.

I had to come back a day early.Good news, lots of birds. They had a wind storm and the birds were in the trees and scared to death. It is green! Two frosts during the week and when I left it was pouring rain and the wind was 90 to nothin'! I was blown all over the road on the way back on Hwy. 2, and the traffic on the Mack had to be escorted at 20 mph, it was hairy! So, that should knock some leaves off and cut some vegetation.Don't believe the weather reports, one day they said breezy with 9 mph gusts, it was more like 40 mph, I had my hat blown off due to wind about a dozen times..It was cool, one morning never broke 31 degrees till sometime after 10:00 am.During the day it was 52-55 but felt like 30, especially in the abundant shade of the leaves with the wind blowing. All the birds were in the trees and very, very skidish. Generally when one is in the trees you can get pretty close, but no more than 50 yards were producing the flush from the trees. Some of the maples had red and burnt orange leaves, but no yellow. After the frosts the wind was knocking the high leaves from the popples. They are in the berries and there are a ton of those.Berries are on by the gobs, but if it's windy, no need to hunt the berries.I spent half of the first day moving, and helping locals move trees from across the roads.I probably heard 50 birds flush from the trees one day, no second flushes at all. They were flying from tree to tree and coming up wild. I don't think I will be going this early again.More to follow, drove through the night and very sleepy.I have one very sad tale to tell............later.

Sorry about your luck. I've never been earlier than Oct 9 and after your story i don't think I ever will.

If I couldn't go in the middle of Oct. and had to choose between early and late, I think I'd choose late, as in November before deer season.

We are leaving the 20th from the looks of things and going from last year Im hoping for atleast 50 flushes a day from my covers .. We averaged according to my flush counter 25 different birds a day last year and and totalled somewhere around 30 to 35 total per day. I was in the U.P. in both 99 and 2000 during the peaks and we were having days over 100 flushes it was as bad as i hate to say it... too many birds? Im going to set my mark on killing 50 birds in 10 days Is that too high birdman or GSP .. If your nice to me ill let you guys take pictures with them :)

50 birds / 10 days

I don't think 50 birds in 10 days is too high. Just make sure to watch out for the antenna :D. 11 more days and I will be in W.I. Really excited, been working the dogs on quail think starting to see little light bulbs click on every time.
