I saw 5 in Elliott Co. while Turkey hunting on Friday. I spooked them in the morning walking to my setup. Good to see them around. I had not heard or seen any in 5 years or more.

Yes. The grouse population report is on the department website at http://fw.ky.gov/pdf/0910grousereport.pdf
The drumming survey graph is on the second page and the drumming survey table is on the last page. Drumming surveys consist of 15 stops usually separated by half a mile. The survey is run on two consecutive mornings, starting 30 minutes prior to sunrise. Observers listen for 4 minutes at each stop.

From what ive read on Pennsylvania's website they are going away from drumming surveys because of so much varience and flaws in the information gathered. Ive actually tried to contact the woman who does there research and havent been able to get ahold of her. Im curious as to what there doing in place of the count.

Kentucky’s 2009-10 ruffed grouse hunting season began Nov. 1, 2009 and ended Feb. 28, 2010. Hunters were able to pursue grouse in 53 eastern Kentucky counties. An early grouse season was open on 7 wildlife management areas (WMA) from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2009 (90 days). Those WMAs included Beaver Creek, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Cane Creek, Clay, Dix River, Fleming, and Lake Cumberland.

Has any cutting taken place on these areas and has the numbers of grouse increased?

Of that list, I'm only up-to-date with the NE Region WMAs - Clay and Fleming. The ice storm of 2003 created a lot of small canopy gaps at Fleming and the grouse have responded well based upon the drumming survey results. Fifty acres of poplar were cut at Fleming this past winter, so it is too early for grouse populations to respond. Twenty-two acres of red cedar were cut at Clay last summer and an additional 58 acres of cedar are being cut right now. So still too early for any boost in the population.
