Man, I grew up in Ohio and we used to have a lot of fun hunting 'hogs back in the 70's and 80's. Like some of you, I used a 788 22-250, and it put a hurt on them. Haven't had the opportunity to do that in years.

About 20 years ago or so you all but stopped seeing groundhogs around here. A lot of people blamed it on yotes and I bought into that until they started coming back in droves a few years ago. There's more yotes then ever yet I can't drive past an old barn or culvert without seeing a groundhog so they couldn't have been the reason.
I've never intentionally hunted them before but I've shot several.

On the farms I have hunted for 30 years you will see plenty of ground hog around the barns and farm lots close to the houses or roads. Get back into the fields even fields that have large rock piles from years of clearing and they are few and far between.

Just saw a groundhog out, it’s 34 degrees. Was 22 or so last night. Coldest I can recall ever seeing one out and about. He must have procrastinated getting some winter weight on.

I have seen several out this week also driving from hunting spots to home.

I shot one two years ago in December with snow on the ground. I was coming out of the woods behind my house from bow hunting. Topped the hill and saw him next to the barn where the snow had melted out about 5 feet. Dropped my bow and back off down the hill. Walked around the hill side to the house. Grabbed my Contender and after him I went. Got to a hay bale about 65 yards from him and sent him into permanent hibernation.
