I used to go to a farm out in Versailles that had a bunch of rock fences. 9 or 11 was my best day. It was loaded with them.

Do you guys remember seeing them hanging on fences??? I have seen 3 or 4 hanging together. Guys would shoot them them hang them on the fence by the road so everyone driving by could see them.

Some land owners would tell me to hang them on a fence but back then I took everyone I shot and recovered. Ate the small ones. Used the others to feed my uncle's coon dogs.

Coyotes have really lowered the groundhog populations

I love shooting them. Never ate them. I killed a few in my early teens with .270 and shotgun. Fast forward to 2 years ago I shot one during turkey season on my salt lick with 3.5”. I got another one on my camera now and it’s just matter of time.

Yes, I was just about to make a comment. When I was a kid, Daddy would always take a 243 with us to church. After Sunday dinner at Granny's, we'd ride the roads around Park City and shoot pigs. Most of the time, out the car window. I was the pig collector. Fences on good fields would have as many as 12-15 pigs hanging on them. That was late 60's, early 70's. Almost every Sunday afternoon from April thru August.

Yes, I went years from the mid 90's until mid/late 2000's without seeing one.

Growing up in the '60's back in Indiana, June was "Groundhog" month for me. I spent many days during the Spring-Summer Months hunting them on several grain producing farms in my area. Used several calibers from: .22 Magnum, .17 Ackley Bee, .17/223, .17 Remington, .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, .222, .25-20, .32-20, .243, .25 Souper, .270, .308, .44 Magnum, and managed a few with a .30-06, all using varmint type expanding bullets. Even shot a few using .410 slugs and once tried to kill one with a .25 Auto at close range. It has been several years since I shot my last Groundhog, as they aren't many to be found now days due to Coyotes, which weren't around back in the '60's.

1622945708-picsay.jpg It took a few days but the 6mm JDJ scored this morning. Spent this evening mowing around the barn and sink hole where I get most of my whistle pigs from. Be back out after them tommorow

Loved hunting em when we had lots of em. Started out with a 17 hmr but couldn’t reach out like I wanted. Ended up with a savage 12 with 26 inch bull barrel in 22-250. Tack Driver! Was a great early summer activity before pastures grew up too tall to grab a cooler of cold ones and sit under shade tree watching river bottom. Used to could shoot 3-5 in an afternoon depending on how well you shot that day.

Not enough around to make it worthwhile anymore. I kill a few bow hunting early deer season in the woods but not enough to target them.

Most likely [part] of the problem is too many are killed during their breeding season. We should have waited until July to hunt them.

A young one just moved into a thick spot next to the garden. He has to go ASAP!
