Got my first deer!!

I got my first deer this past Sunday in Ohio's muzzleloading season[:D]. I took what I thought was a nice doe but after it was down I found out that it was a buck that had dropped its antlers the day or night before. (The spots on its head were still bloody). Either way, it was a nice deer and I was excited as you can imagine. IS it really early for them to start dropping their antlers? I talked to a game warden who was sitting next to the truck when I got back and he said that he usually starts seeing them drop in January.

I should mention that it looked like it had been shot in the hind leg even though it was walking and moving fine(I watched it come down a trail). I am thinking the stress from that might have been part of the reason that they dropped early. The deer looked healthy other than that.

Last year, I saw Canada deer drop antlers in late January and February and saw several Alabama deer with hard antler in April. December does seem early.

Yeah it's typical for those antlers to shed right now. There are many factors that fall into this .

I think a breeding buck that has run hard thru the rut could loose them anytime now, half the bucks coming to my feeders and my friends feeders now have lost there horns, only a couple of spikes and a small six have bone.I have looked all over the place for sheds and come up emty so far.we only have 4 to5 inchs of crusty snow they should show up.Bucko
