Shot him at 625. Got setup on this bird at first light. He gobbled good on the limb. I got about 100 yards from him an set up with 1 hen decoy. I wanted to get closer to him but I didnt think i could without him busting me. I soft called to him while he was still roosted 1 time an didnt call again till he came down. Once he did i took my hat an cackled. Followed by some soft calling. He gobbled a few more times then shut up. I didnt know if he had hens an was leaving or coming. So I stayed rdy an after a few min without seeing or hearing nothing a crow sounded off right above me an he shocked gobbled about 50 yards from me. Just down the hill from me. Wasnt long untill i seen his head coming up the hill to me. He was kinda coming in behind me. An as I moved my gun around to get on him he seen my movement an locked up but didnt spook. After a short stand off he took a few more steps out behind some brush toward me an the decoy I needed an I took the 15 yard shot. I usually dont use decoys but this morning im glad I did.
    1 1/4 an 1 1/8 spurs
    10 1/4 an 7 3/4 beards

He was alone. But he was the first one i setup on this year that was. Where i hunt i think there just getting to the point where you can work them without a dozen hens around them. I have said since seasoned opened that the last week would be the best. Im starting to see a lot more hens alone an nesting then i did a few weeks ago. But thats just my 2 cents. Hope to get my ol man a bird an possibly my daughter a bird this coming week so we will see how it turns out.

Nice Tom, Greg!!:) I am glad you got a nice Tom, as its been sort of a tough season. I've only heard one "gobble" on my property (Opening Day) and seen only the SAME three Hens out in my backfield. Seen nothing at all in my woods. Though sure I'd bag one this season....Maybe this December Season I'll see one, but doubt it.

Hate to hear that dave. Might want to try out some public land. That isnt over ran. Up untill the last 5 or 6 years i didnt have to many good private spots to hunt so i relied on public land 90 percent of the time during spring turkey season. An to be honest it was very very rare i didnt tag out on public land. May have to scout a little harder an deal with call shy birds but it can be done with tons of success. But you never know your place maybe packed with birds next yr. No matter how good you are if there aint any birds there your not gonna kill many. Stick with it. It will just make that much better when you do get one.
