3 or 4 years, ago i had one of my best friends, wanting to go, with me turkey hunting. He says i couldnt hear a train anymore, if it was about to run over me. Anyway, was about 1 o' clock in the evening, nothing goin on, so i let out a loud yelp, i didnt hear anything, but he made a fist and started shaking it. I whispered did you hear one, and he said yes. So i waited about 10 minutes or so and did another yelp, he shook his fist, and motioned, with his hand he was coming. I have always believed when calling, less is best, most of the time, i have had a few, you had to call to every breath till you killed then, but for the most part, for mw less is best. So he keeps, shaking his fist, and motioning he is coming. I knew he heard a gobbler, but i had no idea, where he was or how close or far. Then next thing i know, he makes his hands in a half circle, so i took it as he was seeing him strutting. So must of the birds, come out in front of me or to the left, to the right, there is the top of a hill at 40 yards, So i had him set up to be able to shoot in front or to the left side. So i said you see him and he pointed over to the right and nodded yes , Since i knew he had to be 40 yards or less, i said kill him, when you can, so he starts trying to get where he can shoot to the hard right, he hits up against me, and im falling in my chair, and i had a big red soda, empty can laying there, so im trying to get balance with my feet so , i dont fall and pretty much, accidently, pretty much just stomped that can, He was leaning all the way over and shot left handed, and the gun kicked him over on a 5 gallon bucket he was sittong on, he had leaning over to shoot, and killed him.I have seen a lot of things turkey hunting, but this is by far the hardest, i ever laughed. But bad part is, i never heard this turkey gobble, at all. He said he was a long way off the 1st time i called and he gobbled. But he said he gobbled, a couple times, when he could see him. Which had to be around 40 yards for him to even see him

One thing is for sure most of my most memorable hunts are always with a friend. One of my favorites we were setup on a logging road buddy was set so he could see down the road i was back off it a bit. I see something coming down the road but its still pretty dark but just kinda looked like a coon moving very slowly. at about 10 feet from the decoy it took two big leaps and jumped on the decoy. It was a bobcat. once it jumped on the decoy it got out of there as fast as possible.

Had a hawk slam into my avian-x decoy. Bounced off and landed on a limb in a nearby tree as the decoy spun around in the stake. Not to be deterred the hawk landed on the back of the hen deke and was trying to grab it in its talons, could hear it scratching but couldn’t get ahold of it. Eventually gave up and flew off. Decoy was crooked but still standing.

I have 2 friends that I always seemed to end up calling birds in for every year. One year the three of us were together and up on top of a long ridge. We had set up and worked a bird but either it had hens and they took him away or he just went another direction. Anyhow about 2 hrs later we were slowly working our way back up the ridge towards the direction he headed off in. We would call occasionally trying to strike up a gobbler or maybe have him give up his location. Anyhow we were at a point on the ridge where it dropped off really steep to the back side. I thought I heard a faint whine of a feeding bird. We crouched down and as I did I just saw the very top of a gobblers head below us on the steep side. I told em he was there, one of you run down heading left, one run down heading right. Whoever gets the bead on him kill him. They looked at me like I was drunk. I said run, just like you hear em play the trumpet at the ball game and say CHARGE! "Are you kidding"! I said "go and go now cause if you wait much longer he'll be gone!" They counted to three and went charging over the ridge and BOOM one of em kills him! 11 3/4" beard, 1.5" spurs. Sometimes ya just gotta make a decision and act on it. Hesitation can cost you a bird!

Another time a good friend who is a Vietnam vet that had never killed a longboard, was in town to hunt with me. He had a ton of schrapnel and other injuries from the war and at one point was told he'd never walk again, but with the good lords healing hands he did that and more. Anyhow we had a bird respond to a call I made and he was close but up hill behind us and coming fast. I could hear it running. Told him to get up against a tree and just as the bird stepped into view he got against a small white pine and when he leaned on it, it started waving like a flag! I told him kill it, as he tried to shoot it, the recoil rolled him down the hill like 3 full rolls! He missed! He was all down on himself, but I told him we'd get on one and kill it. We went down into a deep hollow and up what we call the big ridge. As we were moving along the top trying to strike a bird I heard a bird about 1000yds away just screaming. I knew we had to go after it, and told him come on. As we crested the ridge he said "I ain't got much left". I told just a bit further, well that turned into another ridge! The bird was across a large powerline and was maybe 150yds in the other side. I told him one more climb and you'll love the result. Anyhow I told him do not stop in the power line, if that bird drifts our way he will see you in the line, so don't stop till your across. It was a bit of a climb, as I get across into the woods I look back and he's stopping for his breath in the line! :). He gets going again and we get in the woods a ways and setup in an downed tree top. I call and he responds, a 1/2 minute later he gobbles again and he's closer. He doesn't move his gun to the direction of the sound, so I stood up reached down and put my hands under his legs and picked him up and pointed where the bird was gonna show. He gets his gun up and I call again softly and he gobbles right there, head comes up and BOOM he dead! I was very happy I was able to get that hunt done for him! Not sure who was happier!

This is what turkey season is all about! Memories!

Got my brother all set up last year. It was already pretty good seeing light. I wanted to call in hopes of him getting one. Got him situated against a brush pile on a ridge that had been logged the Spring before. Bit more that I got the decoys out and was headed back to find a place to sit, I see a huge black snake come out of the brush pile and slither around his waste. Hunt was over after all the girlish screaming that took place.

Took a younger coworker several years ago, and for whatever reason he bought a new shotgun the day before and had never shot it. A real light stoeger pump I believe. This young man might weigh 100 lbs soaking wet. I told him since he hadn’t patterned it to wait for a close shot 15 -20 yards. We set up in a little blind on small tripod seats and after and hour or so we had action. Came in on a run straight to the and pulled the trigger at less than 10 yards and like a damn cartoon my buddy falls backwards out of the bottom of the blind with his legs sicking up from what appeared to be the most violent recoil i have ever saw. I got to laughing hard and jumped out of the front window of the park blind to step on the neck if the Turkey, which was hard to do being ticked so bad. Apparently the back legs of the chair became unstable causing the fall but it sure looked funny.

Used to me and one of my best friends would hunt together all the time and it always ended up with us not seeing much and laughing so hard about stuff that we didn’t care. Everything is so much funnier when you’re supposed to be quiet.

I have some friends come hunt from indiana most years. I normaly don't pack much turkey hunting and use old stuff that has worked for years. They are pretty well oposite have a lot of stuff really nice stuff. I still where the same vest i had since late 90's they make fun of. So i now play it up little more me being hill jack and all. I used to have a farm leased with a big river bottom. They hunted the afternoon before. Set up a really nice pop up blind on one end. I can only hunt mornings as almost always have alot going on with the farm. I go next morning tell them i just going to set on the other end ask if one wants to go with. One does i had a yellow hydro fluid bucket on truck take that for a seat. I wish you could of seen the look! We go down there. At light i call a little soft. Big old turkey roosted across the river never gobbles just glides down there to my homemade decoy a fan on a survey stake. He shoots him. We hear one all fired up I call him real aggressive. Fly across the river i shoot him. Every year they still talk about that. I have only called 3 turkeys across water in my life 2 of them that day. I didn't tell them that.

Several years ago I took a friend turkey hunting. He had never killed a gobbler. We set up in a blind to call in a small pasture. I set a hen decoy up about 20 yards in front of us. After i did some calling, a gobbler came into the field gobbling and when he saw the hen decoy he confidently waddled the 50 yards to the decoy strutting a couple of times. I wispered to my buddy to take the shot when he was ready. The gobbler walked right up to the hen decoy and then walked around behind the decoy. The gobbler waggled his behind a couple of tlmes and jumped on the decoy’s back and my buddy pulled the trigger. That gobbler lost his mind over a female.

My wife said it was an awful thing to do. 🤣

Couple years ago me and a buddy was in the blind bow hunting. I brought backup just in case things went south. I called and the gobbler answered. He pitched down right in the decoys. My buddy drew and shot. Swing and a miss. Well I’m making fun of him and the gobbler has no clue we’re there. He draws again and sends it. Swing and a miss. Well I get to laughing so hard I spooked. the bird. He said just shoot the damn thing. I pulled up and boom pop pow!!!! Never drew a feather on that sob with three shots. We wasn’t even mad we laughed our asses off. We never set up on that bird again. I said hell we done missed five times at 15 yards he gets a pass for this year😂
