Done a little researching but input welcome. Wife and I are selling our cruiser on the lake and getting yaks for weekend family trips. Wife will have my 5 year old son and I will have our 60 lb lab with me. 9 year old is getting her own. I really like the native slayer. Is it doable with a dog that big to kayak? Any models bigger with maximum stability I should look into? We will be fishing alot. Any recommendations for the daughter?

I know nothing about kayaks, but I want one so I'll be watching the responses as well.

What kinda of cruiser do you have for sale? I'm also on the market for a newer runabout.

I should have been a little more specific with my answer, so...My little Terrier is a nervous little dog which has to move around, if your dog will just be happy just sitting in one spot, the rear tank well might be large enough for your dog to lay. But, I'm thinking the dog would be happier being able to move around. That's is one reason I always liked the Ultimate, for nice quite relaxing cruises with a small dog. Never got one, because I don't have room for 2 yaks and I have to have a pure fishing kayak.

I've been looking at those ultimates. They have a tandem with removable seats also. Looks like it would be a good fit for me. Thanks

I have a Wilderness Systems Ride 135. It is very stable but I'm not sure how it would do with a 60lb lab moving around behind the seat. There was a heck of a deal on an Wilderness Systems ATAK the other day on craigslist but I would be shocked if it was still available. I believe they had it listed for $1200

I have a Slayer Propel 13 and a Ultimate FX15 Tandem. Both are great boats but if I was going to have a dog with me I would choose the Ultimate. There is a Wilderness Commander 140 for sale on Louisville Craigslist for $950. It is a single seat kayak/canoe hybrid, seems like a good deal.

I have an ultimate fx 12. I also had a lab for a long time. I never took my lab in the ultimate but had my lab in my canoe many times and think a 12 ft ultimate would be too small. I'd say go with the 15 footer or a canoe. The ultimate has excellent stability and paddles fast.

Thanks guys. I had texted a guy I sold bees too last spring because I remembered he told me about doing fishing tournaments from kayaks. Come to find out he's the guy who started yak angler forum. He has about 10 kayaks including the 15' tandem ultimate. Believe I may try several out. Glad my kids enjoy the outdoors as much as I do.
Redfeather we'll have to fish one day. I'm in salt alot, I'm sure you have been too. Next trip heading to Chaplin. Doubles as duck scouting trips also.

Feel Free's are nice. I have the Lure 11.5 and stand most of the time while fishing. I'd recommend taking the dog with you for tryouts. Also look at the weight rating. Great move on your part selling the big boat and opting for kayaks. Your family will love it.
