It seems bears are pretty much everywhere east of I-75 these days.
The Jenny Wiley Grave site is not anywhere close to the park, maybe 40 miles or more. I think the park would be a great place to take your family ! One thing I would say to do while in the area for sure is to check out the elk herd. Lots of places near the park to see them. Good food at the Lodge too.
I am a little partial to the park since I work there lol. We try to keep a lot of things for everyone to do. We have a whole activity schedule that runs from Wednesday afternoon to Saturday night. There is the theatre, 15 miles of trails, 1100 acres of lake to fish and so on. I have only had one issue all summer in the campground and I escorted those people out of the campground within one hour of the complaint. We also have lodge rooms and cabins to rent if you don't feel like roughing it lol. Boats and canoes for rent, guided fishing fun trips, pontoon tours and all sorts of stuff. I always like to promote the park and it is a great, family oriented place to visit.
Hey thank you all for your info. I really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to this weekend because I haven't been back since I was a kid and I want my kids to have a fond memory of the park like I do. We are staying in prestonburg, (I unfortunately did not make reservations early enough to stay in the lodge). Definitely going for a hike and bringing some rods and tackle. I wouldn't mind taking the kids out for a canoe ride. We have a old cabin cruiser but I don't know if I feel like pulling it down there. Are there horsepower restrictions on the lake? I guess the park staff might be able to point us in the direction to possible sneak a peek at the elk?
Also, do you all have a favorite restaurant near by?
I worked there for about 4 years before school and corrections. I worked for the corp side (contractor, in a boat on the lake every day) for a couple years and then for the state side for a couple. Mostly trail work back then. I fish there, I hunt there and Ive trapped it too(upper johns creek end) Good WMA if you get to know it.
EdLongshanks: No horsepower restrictions. Most locals can give you a heads up on the Elk. Get in touch with our local warden, Eric Thomas. He often keeps tabs on some herds..Some decent local food is Lizzy B's, Pig-in-a-poke and Mcguire's brickhouse. Another local favorite is Billy Ray's. Really a favorite because its a ol' staple in town known for its old style pool room burgers. The food is pretty good overall.
You gotta go to Billy Ray's restaurant while in Prestonsburg .
For anyone who has not been to Jenny Wiley state park, I highly recommend taking your family!! It was a great time. I wish I would have reserved a cabin and I really wish I had towed our boat down, but it was a blast nevertheless. The hiking trails were great. Southeastern kentucky's beauty is unmatched. Dewey lake is perfect. Plenty of spots along the shore to pull off, picnic, go swimming, fish. The outdoor theatre was impressive. Peter Pan was a bit much for me...but the kids absolutely LOVED it. Everyone we met and talked to couldn't have been nicer. I'm already planning our next trip. Thanks everyone for responding.
That's awesome! Im very glad you liked our little slice of Kentucky.
