I don't believe the total Fall harvest has any considerable effect on the Spring turkey population. I completed the KDFW survey the other day and responded that if an increase in turkeys is desired, they should extent the trapping season to Spring or beyond, extend the crow hunting season, and allow using a rifle for hunting coyotes at night. Hawks, owls and snakes will still get their share of eggs, but those changes will certainly help the population of turkeys when they are most vulnerable.
First of all there is a not that many of fall turkey hunters chasing fall turkey's. So has never had any affect on turkey population. It is predators, the weather in the spring has affect on chicks, if you have a cold wet spring, chicks get wet and a chill they will die. If you ever come up on a nest there will be any thing from 10 to 12 eggs, only 1% survives to adult turkeys. I had all of this explained to me by a WV wildlife biologist. Wv has had fall season since the 60's and has never had any affect. The population will peak the drop pending weather, predators etc.
They can do whatever they want, but I usually only turkey hunt in the fall. I hunt KY and TN in the fall just personal preference. That’s the only thing I bow hunt anymore. I just wish they would let us kill more bear. They are awful to deal with, and where I hunt the houses are a little ways off but still close enough to be considered bait sites. It sucks.
