Have not used black corrugated. I would think that would be hot in the summer and sunlight cannot get through to a 2' trees leaves, if you where using a 4' to 5' tube for deer protection. I'm sure it would be fine for a 8'' to 10'' rabbit guard and then fence. Go to planta.com and conservation services inc.com and read. Like I said earlier I think Plantra are the best.

I was actually at Don’s place Sunday and can vouch for his trees and the chestnuts. They look amazing. I’m planning to buy several soon if I can get back up that way and he still has some.

USA.
I had all mine in the Tubex tree tubes. They were doing good til that freeze. The ones that weren't in tubes are still doing good.

Q. So you plant them and they grow and produce nuts at a certain point. Are these nuts viable and thus through natural progression via squirrels etc would help reforest the area with dunstans?

Im curious as it would seem the American chestnut foundation etc would be doing that (maybe they are I’m just thinking out loud).

I’d be all for getting more diversity in my woods even if those a generation after me are the one to reap the rewards.

Yes plant them and they grow. The Dunstan variety of the American Chestnut is blight resistant. They have been around since the late 40’s early 50’s. The nuts are viable after cold stratification. The Eastern US forest was predominately American Chestnut until the blight killed them. Look it up online and you can read all about it. I’m no forestry expert but I’m sure it would take a long time to change the makeup of the eastern US forest naturally. There is actually a American Chestnut Foundation. I have 280 Dunstans from 1 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old. The 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 year old trees are producing 8 to 44 husk per tree. I can pick up nuts during the day but I can’t find nuts early in the morning the animals seem to clean them up. Have not seen any self made seedlings in the adjacent woods and I mow around my trees in my orchards. Probably not producing enough nuts to saturate the area at this point. I have mostly white oak with some walnut hickory and popular. Planted chestnuts and fruit trees for the deer and have 3 food plots. Getting ready for when KY gets CWD and does not allow hunting over bait. Look at my classified ad for chestnut seedlings for more information.

When are the nuts ready to harvest? I’m gonna be gone September 26 for a month and was wanting to harvest the nuts for planting. 1 of my trees has 5 burs/husks this year.

Mine usually start dropping first week of October. Had some six year old trees already drop them all. Have some other six year old trees looking like they are about to drop.

Thanks. I’m having a friend check on and gather them for me. The burs was still green on the 25th.
