Just curious of opinions on these trees. Are they worth it? How long have you had them? Are they producing good? Do the deer like them? I’d love to hear from someone that has had them 10+ years.
Do you/have you applied any type of fertilizer?I only have 9 trees. 3-5 years old and 8-12 feet tall. I think 2-3 husks on 4 trees thus far. Looking forward to then producing eventually.
Osmocote plus. Slow released fertilizer that will not burn roots or the trunk.Do you/have you applied any type of fertilizer?
I have been afraid to and the suggestion above is much appreciatedDo you/have you applied any type of fertilizer?
I use that for my seedlings that I grow and my grown trees that are 2 to 5 years old. Usually fertilize late March and late June. Would not fertilize after that cause new growth won't have time to harden. Wonder if I could ask you a question. I know nothing about forums. I have a classified ad for chestnut seedlings for sale. What is the best and safest way for people to contact me or me contact them about my address or mobile number. Is there some private way or just put the info out for everyone to see? Thanks for any help.I have been afraid to and the suggestion above is much appreciated

I use fence but was going to use tubes this spring when i get my 100 tree order, you got me worried. Did you have the same problem with persimmon or white oaks with the tubes? What Size tubes did you use I was going to buy 4 inch corrugated pipe and cut a section for each treeI had about 2 dozen trees that were in tree tubes last year when we got those 2 late cold spells a week or so apart. Killed all but 2 dead as they could be. Was hoping they would come back but they were done for. Had a few others that weren't in tubes and they made it. I thought the tubes would protect them but I thought wrong. They had already leafed out and temps got down into the 20's and then did it again about 10 days later. That done it. They were out the top of the tubes. Probably 5 to 6 foot trees.
I have 280 Chestnut trees from 1 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old. They are in Plantra or Tubex 5' tree tubes. I have 60 Wild Crab Apple, Deer Pear, Mexican Plum and American Persimmon trees 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old in those same tubes. I have lost a couple plums and persimmons. I have lost 3 chestnuts first year planted from voles. I have never watered these trees and I use Osmocoat Plus fertilizer. Don't fertilize until after the last frost or the new growth will die from the frost. The good thing about these tubes is in the summer they condense and water the tree. I have about 50 Tubex and the rest are Plantra. I think the Plantra tubes are the best. Also when I plant I use a heavy plastic 40''x40'' weed barrier from Plantra and a 5' piece of 1/2'' emt pipe to support the tube. Pipe is outside the tube and I use an 11'' black heavy duty rubber tie wrap with two pieces of wire inside tie wrap When my trees start to branch outside the tube I cut the tube lengthwise so I can pull the tube and check the trunk and prune any branches starting inside the tube. My 5 1/2 year old trees will be coming out of the tubes next spring and I will be fencing them. Not looking forward to fencing 320 trees. Hope this helps. Good luck and good hunting. Don't forget I have a classified ad for the chestnuts.
Would black corrugated drain tile be less expensive or less effective? Im not familiar with the tubing you speak of nor the pros and cons. I have caged 160 trees and yeah, it sucksI have 280 Chestnut trees from 1 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old. They are in Plantra or Tubex 5' tree tubes.
