Yep, just like today. My grandson worked 2 hours weedeating for the neighbor, got $50.
Do the math.
Thats $2,000, right on par with the quality of car i bought for $150.
Your point ?
My point was I’ve been in the work force since 14 and have been taxed on every paycheck I’ve received.

You made a comment on another reply, a couple can make $80,000 at McDonald’s, that’s not true because it’s not the take home.

In that same post you said everyone wants to be extravagant, I could not agree more with that. Look at the size of the homes alone vs 30 years ago for example.

If your resident retards would argue that every cent you paid into FICA invested in a blue chip mutual fund over the years wouldn’t be worth many times more than the insolvency of the social security trust then they’re dumber than I thought.
[/QUOTE]

Well, they dont. I think they have forgotten to teach simple math in the school sustems now

Its def not the take home, and why is that ?
Taxes, more taxes due to more social programs.
Social security alone being over 12% of what you earn…..
I dont think this is sinking in to you.
Then throw in state, federal, property, sales, you winding up paying half of you earnings in taxes.

What you pay in social security alone, invested in conservative stocks, over a 40 year period , you will retire rich.
The problem is, most people do not have the self restraint to do that. They get a statement showing how much is in their 401 k and they buy a new car, boat, etc.
Then when they are too old cry they have nothing and have to live on a puny SS check.
No responsibility.
You cant fix stupid.

I do get what you’re saying. No one bitches about taxes more than me. I have for the past 2 years had $200 taken out on top of withholding and my wife takes out an additional 100 and we still paid in a substantial amount. We pay in more than a lot of people make salary wise. But it doesn’t change the fact that even if you nuke social security something needs to exist to help those that are less fortunate by no fault of their own in the ways I described earlier. Not to mention the fact that I do invest in my retirement fund but all it takes is one event and your money is gone. That scares the ever loving shit out of me. People act like it can’t happen either

Disagree, not fair at all. Im opposed to any stimulus check, of any kind, always have been.
Its nothing more than the gov giving away taxpayers money, which only benefits those that dont pay taxes. Socialist programs are all bad, social security included.
Just so we’re clear and I’m not not mistaken on my understanding of “socialist” vs “socialism”. You think all socialist programs are bad. So that means you want to end all of the following.
Military
Police
Fire Departments
Paved highways
Clean city water
Electricity
So on and so forth…?

People get mad about their money. And people believe all things are equal and everyone has the exact same circumstances as everyone and everyone should be able to pull theirselves up and come out of any situation when in reality it’s not possible no matter how much you want to believe it. Yes, jobs are plentiful but one medical event or car crash decimated your ability to work and catch up because no place wants you full time for benefits. Yes McDonald’s is hiring everyday but they want you to work 25-36 hours a week. Working closely with employment specialist they will tell you just truthfully how hard it is right now. Truth is everyone on here pretty much agrees with the Bible and we’re supposed to help our neighbors that are struggling. That doesn’t mean tell them to do better. People are going through shit you can’t imagine. This all goes out the window when you’re talking about people who refuse to work

That’s exactly the point I was making.

While you also say %12 invested by yourself would be worth more? Not if you aren’t makin anything. Trust me I was sold that lie by a few jobs.

All in all everyone goes through life differently and forcing your experience as what everyone else should do is no different than these gay/trans.

You got remarkably lucky and coupled with hard work you get to retire.

And lucky I mean your lucky someone didn’t rear end you while driving home from the bar and get a dui. Which happens to a lot of people.

Part of the problem with the world today is we assume absolutely everyone experiences life the same way when it’s entirely untrue. I’m sure OP is a wonderful person and is the symbol of overcoming adversity. But to think his life and ability and experiences should transfer laterally is crazy. But to go through life today is difficult. Every old timer says we have it beyond easy and then in the same breath says they wish we’d go back to the old days. You could live on nothing. Literally nothing as long as you had family land which was the case for most. You raised a garden that you mostly propagated yourself or with seeds you got on credit and ate soup beans every single day. Average rent today in my area is about $700 without utilities. A vehicle is at least 1500 to 2000 to get something that runs. A family of 4 spends probably 2-300 a week on groceries. If you’re making 15$ an hour and are a single income family you are saving literally every single penny to have a home and some modicum of food in the home. You cannot tell me it’s easier today.

History proves, over your lifetime, stocks pay off. You only lose it when you do panic, and pull it after a drop.
Every down trend we ever had, winds up coming back over your lifetime.
Only the high rollers that invest in risky get rich schemes get burned.
Tell me of one thing, that is cheaper now, than it was 30 years ago.
You have to diversify with stocks, not put all your eggs in one basket. Even if one fails, the others make up for it.

Feel free to help anyone you want, and i have, usually to find out their troubles are self inflicted.
Yep, help anyone you want, but the government should not force you to help someone.
Especially when you dont know where the money goes, and who benefits

So tell me your experiences of earning a living in 1980, high intrest, inflation, .60 a gallon gas, earning $2 an hour.

So if you made just $20 , gas would be $6 a gallon, and lets go on and put home mortgage intrest at 12%

But you dont remember those days right?
Were you born yet ? Were your parents born yet ? 😁

100% everyone’s against assistance until you see the people that work their asses off every single day and still can’t make it. Or the elderly who lose limbs to diabetes because it’s either insulin or food.
I am 61 and have never met anyone who worked all their life and couldn't take care of themselves financially.

I agree for the most part. But there are always exceptions. I know a man right now that can’t. At 78 years old he has had to go back to work because his entire savings got wiped out by medical bills. Got hit by another vehicle that run him off the road and left the scene. Vehicle totaled and only he only had liability. Only money he now has is SSI. Can’t afford another vehicle, etc…. Life happens and sometimes people need help pulling up their own boot straps.
