I wanted to start this thread for anyone who might want to get into duck hunting but not have any advice on what call to get or to brag about something cool they have. For me that was tough. I ended up just getting 2 duck commander calls (the classic and the picker) and I have a buck Gardner goose hammer.

I still sound like crap. But I was wondering if anyone could give me a review/suggestion on a call I can get to give someone who is good at calling as a gift. I want something that looks and sounds good that’s not just your normal off the shelf call. The guy showed me the ropes last year so I figured a call would be a good thank you gift but he has never mentioned wanting a specific call.

RM Custom Calls are the best all around calls on the market today.

You can get calls from Macks PW that are personalized. Me personally, I'd rather have a call I can use rather than having one that's extremely nice that I don't want to hunt with. I'm not a call collector.

Its all about preference on calls. I've had an Echo XLT for years. I blowed a few calls last fall but never purchased anything. I tried a few from RNT (Daisy Cutter, Mondo, Mondo LT, etc). I just didn't care for any of them. I couldn't get used to the cutdown style calls. With that said, I'd like to blow Rolling Thunder's new call (Brute). I know many say its an easier style cutdown. A few guys I know have a Lares Call. They sound really, really good. If I were to purchase one tomorrow, I'd go there first and blow it.

I suggest cheaper calls. $20-$30. Double reeds are easier to use for most people. Once you become competent, then you can appreciate the difference in calls.

My go to will always be my ivory daisy cutter. Don’t know what it is about it, but it just seems to have that extra something. Recently added a custom Mondo LA for this season as well. Thing has some serious bark to it.

Daisy Cutter. They're a classic, and I've kilt more ducks with a daisy cutter than avian flu

    Fact.
But 15 years ago, before the DD crowd brought in the roost shooters, it weren't half bad.

I would ask your friend if there is a call he has been looking at or wanting to try. This is a safer bet than going out and trying to find a call for someone else that they might use. I have a couple gift calls that I will use while hunting from time to time but most of them have gone on the closet shelf or sit in the truck and get used as I drive.

My favorite is a old rnt nos. A call that would be a really nice gift about anyone would like and use would be a hedge echo timber or xlt.
