idk why anybody set a live trap for coons. My dad does this. Keep telling him don’t but I reckon at his age he just likes to see’em hell idk. Lol. He lets them go if they don’t have a pecker. Lol.
I catch’em all and dispatch them and possums on site.
I set out cans. All I set.
Only reason I do is to avoid a war with neighbors. My trap cuts their kids pet cats leg off, they turn loose my chickens and dogs eat them, I leave a bucket of antifreeze out, they grind up a beer bottle in my dogs food…. things like that tend to escalate.

I set a live trap in my garage. No place to stake a leghold. They get just as dead.

Has anybody ever went to your DP and there was no food in it.
Guess I could make another thread but I think it fits here really.
I have put the big marshmallows below trigger and one on top. Both be gone without setting it off. Pisses me off. Or I have filled it up to top with dog food (puppy kibbles and bit) all be gone without setting it off. Pisses me off again.
I’m kinda a novice but I been using them 7 years now. I’ve caught 20 something possums and over 70 coons on my place.
I’ve had prolly 6 times there be no food left in all them years.
Also have had a coon foot, coon arm and foot, coon toe, and possum foot left in trap over the years.

I had that happen once. Then I started sanding the end of the dog catch to take any rust off it and then set it barely in the notch. Some what like a hair trigger. No misses since then.
Yea I know Zactly what your saying. I haven’t sanded anything yet but I have set what I thought was a hair trigger. Not completely in the notch. But still happened.

I have trapped Coons with dog proof traps for over 17 years and seems like the big marshmallow and catfood is the best and easiest catch them . I've caught over 300 coons and possums. The last few years I've started using snare line to make sure the trap is not stolen by the coon. The best brand of dog proof trap is the z-trap. Catch many more Coons and possums with it because it will trigger pulling up or down and I make sure they are the white colored ones. I tend to buy them on eBay
