I am calling this BS. A relative of mine(no deer hunting experience) says son-in-law's Doberman Dog quote "got his first Deer" on his rural property. I don't believe it. Sent me a texted picture of a decent sized doe I would estimate was 100 lbs. or a little more live weight hanging in barn. It was perfectly field dressed. It was during muzzle loading season. This son in law does not hunt or know how to handle harvested deer. It was revealed he allows some others who hunt on him and clearly they dressed and hung the doe. Dog sitting next to deer.
I say no way a domestic Doberman could kill a good sized healthy doe in decent weather. Opinions, please

Ive never seen any dog that could catch a full grown deer on its own. Maybe if it had been wounded by a hunter or hit by a car. The pack chasing thing helps because as the dogs tire out they can cut a corner and catch their breath.

Then the killing itself… one dog against a healthy grown deer, that dog isn’t coming out unscathed.

I'm skeptical but I've seen two close calls where one of my dogs was trying to catch a deer that had wandered into our fenced yard and was gaining fast before the deer cleared the fence.... On the other hand, a buck wandered in one morning before daylight and the last I saw of him as in the middle of the driveway when I was getting the gate open for hubby, he had a German Shepherd, a Belgian, a Terrier, and Border-mix all attached to various parts of his body and they were flying around in the breeze as he darned near ran over me! I was sure I'd find him dead at daylight but he was nowhere to be found and all the dogs came back inside a few minutes later relatively unscathed (just a few scratches). Not to mention that I was raised with Dobies & while they can be real bada$$ dogs, I don't think even the biggest one we had (at 115# in his prime & was a trained attack dog) wouldn't have been a match one-on-one with a deer. He'd have given it his all (like he did the fateful day he tried to face off to a coal train) but I'm 99.9% sure the deer would have been able to get away.

I could not see bullet hole in the picture texted to me. The part of the story that was not told was the details of how the dog caught/killed the doe. All he said was "(dog's name)'s first deer". The Doberman probably weighs 70 lbs. I say the doe would have used her hooves and punched the crap out of a single dog real easy and real fast.

I have a buddy that says his pack of beagles and a German Shepard kilt a doe. Basically ran her to death then the German Shepard mauled it. I have no reason to doubt him. There may have been some other mutts mixed in the pack as well
I'm calling BS on that, too. Beagles aren't fast enough to push a deer hard enough to collapse. That deer could run and take a breather before the dogs even got close again. Maybe a pack of Walkers or other coonhound -types could push it that hard, but not beagles.

No, not in Kentucky, in my opinion. "dog" or "dogs" are not listed as legal means of harvesting deer. This was not in Kentucky.
I appreciate the replies and it reenforces my contention a bs story.

This would be my exact response

I would think the dog would go for the throat to kill it. Is the deer in the photos showing any bite marks anywhere? I blame mistakes at the dinner table on the dog, lol. You sure they aren’t using the dog for one of their mistakes?

I would think the dogs muzzle would be bloodied. When Packer tracks one his face is all bloody and he doesnt kill it just bitting and chewing the thing. He pulls hair out and goes nuts.

It may have been a situation where there was a fawn involved and the beagles circled and harassed the doe to near exhaustion while the Shepard helped and waited. Not sure it’s been a while. I’m not even sure he knows what happened….but I know he looked out the window and saw the beagles surrounding the doe on his pond damn and his Shepard mauled it. Once the Shepard took it down, all the other dogs piled on.

Can you just ask him to clarify?
