The best food for bird dogs is deer scraps. I freeze as much bone, fat and scrap as a I can after butchering deer in November and dole it out through the season. It makes a muscular dog that runs all day and kennel mess is absolutely minimal.

When the scraps run out, I feed Wal-Mart premium brown bag. They do very well on it but kennel mess is worse than some of the really high protein feeds because it does have some corn filler.

I feed Pride in the green bag. Each dog goes 2-3 times a day. They have plenty of energy and get up and go, especially my 5 year old.

I have tried others, several but basically use Purina since 1986. Dog chow for summer and Purina One hunting season ,pups . Less cleanup with it too.

^^^^^ What Jacobs said. I only feed Purina dog chow/hi pro depending on time of year. My dads used it for years too, I guess thats where I picked it up at. Purinas good stuff and I see no need to change it. Now having said that, asking whats the best dog food is like asking whats the best dog. You'll get 100 different answers and everybody thinks theirs is best. Feed the highest quality you can afford within reason, your dogs deserve it.

I looked at the site listed dogfoodadvisor.com. I find that they gave bad rankings to some of the most widely known and recommended brands. Read it . They are not talking about the real world or hunting dogs and they don't measure performance, just labels. Sad.

I fed Pride for years. Had good luck with it. Started having touble getting it. Started feeding SportMix. Dogs did very good on it. Then I started getting a lot of stool and having trouble keeping weight on dogs. They must have changed the ingredients. Talked to a couple other people that was feeding it, and they said the same thing. Was scooping as much as was feeding. After that, I started feeding Diamond Naturals chicken and rice. Dogs have good coats, eat the food as soon as it is put in the bowl. I have had to cut back on the feeding because of the weight gain. And the best part, very little clean up, and what I have is very solid.

I called Wing Haven lodge. They have 19 dogs, mostly pointers. They feed ADM(Archer-Daniels-Midland) 26% in winter and 21% in summer. I also called Deer Creek lodge. The have 20 or more dogs, mostly pointers. They feed Eukanuba premium performance.

I fed my Chessie's Diamond Lamb and Rice and was pleased with it at the time. Their coats looked good, their weight was where it should be and they had plenty of energy to hunt all day. However, looking back, their stool was never the consistency I should have expected . I now feed my springer 4health and when she does number 2, it's always solid and hasn't varied since puppy hood. No problem with her weight or off the chart energy, either.
