Deer drop vs run off experience

So been hunting with a .308 165 grain nosler. All 3 deer that have been shot with this rifle have been behind the shoulder up about 4-6 inches. Every deer has made it 100 yds before piling up. I used to hunt with a 30/06 and nearly every deer dropped.

Q. How many people experience deer dropping tracks vs deer running out of site (say 75yds or more).

Shoot them directly in the shoulder socket with that round. I use the exact same round, instant dirt nap on the last 8. Literally less than a step, barely a kick on the ground.

50 yards on all deer shot in or right above the heart with a 308. Straight drop for a button that got heart and opposite shoulder. Straight drop for a spinal with lung shot.

I would say 98 % of the deer, i have killed, with a rifle, have been a 06 with 150 or 180 corelokts, the other 2 % have been with a 7 mag, 150 corelokt, just sitting here thinking, i dont ever remember one goin over 75 yards, may have been 1 or 2 , but i dont remember, any. But, i think, with most any calibur, its is where you hit them. I wasnt hesitate with hunting with a 308 for a minute, the bigger caluburs, 308, being in that category, probably have more, knock down or ft lbs or whatever, the terminology is for that, than some of the smaller caluburs, but they still , kill them, just fine.

Break them shoulders. I won't tolerate a deer running 100 yards with a gun. Hell my bow shot deer hardly ever make it that far.

I am experiencing the same thing with my 308 and core loks. I hunted with a 270 for 25 years and never had this problem

I am experiencing the same thing with my 308 and core loks. I hunted with a 270 for 25 years and never had this problem

Hunted with a 308 last year for the first (and so far, only) time. Core-Lokt 150 grain if I remember correctly. Took a doe opening morning. Approx 60 yard shot to top of heart & she ran maybe 25 yards before dropping - about the same as the buck I shot this year with a 30-06 shooting a 150 grain Core Lokt. He may have gone another 5 yards or so before buckling up but that'd be it.

I think this thread deserves another thread.. Shot placement thread. There’s a lot of places to shoot a deer. If you had a picture of a broadside Deer and the magic marker where would you place that dot???? Above the shoulder, middle of the shoulder, behind the shoulder, in the neck?? I think I’ll create one

The closest I ever came to a "drop in its tracks" was a doe I shot years ago with my '06. She also had the highest vertical leap I'd seen too. Made a couple of steps after she landed.

Killed a 230# buck from 40 yards with a hot .45-70. Both lungs and heart were all pudding and it made it near 100 yards.

I'm pretty good at heart lung shots and they always seem to make me work for them. .50 muzzle loader, .30-30, .30-06, .45-70,. 44 mag, 2015 Sierra Z71 - multiples with all of those (except the truck).

I shot a 308 with Winchester 150 grain it's were u put the bullet that counts. Remington core lock are JUNK I use to shoot them had the same thing they would go about 100 yards

Currently shooting 6.5 143 gr Hornady Precision Hunter. Have never had a deer take a single step. Was previously shooting 140 gr .270 Superformance and would occasionally have deer run a shot distance but that was probably more me than the ammo.

Ive hunted with a 308 for twenty years. The last two bucks I shot both went three feet,
straight down. I shot both in the neck just up from the shoulders.
The shoulder shot in the knuckle area is a deer dropper also. Here is a tip
I have noticed over the years,shoot the deer when he has his head down in a eating
stance. He will not be able to get it back up and hit the dirt right there,most times.....

I'm with Grago. When I used the .270, it was always 130 grain CoreLokt. You guys are obviously going with traditional "behind the shoulder" shots. I could check my log, but I'd guess I have shot close to 50 whitetails with a gun (.270, 25-06, 30-30, 30-06, 12 ga slug, 20 ga slug) over the years. I honestly cannot recall a deer every running out of sight. I aim high shoulder and 90% have dropped where they stood. As Cornpile said, they went 3 feet......straight down. Even those that ran always fell within sight (less than 50 yards). Gotta be shot placement, not the weapon or ammo.
