Just curious if any of you all hunt on farms where the farmers are raising hemp?

Several in my area are going to start raising it this year. Some are raising it for oil, others for fiber. I was wondering if the deer will destroy it the same way they do a newly emerged soybean field? The fiber hemp fields look thick and I could see deer using it as bedding cover. I have googled to see what info is on the web about deer eating hemp and I haven't found a whole lot.

I guess if it was a good deer food one of the big companies would be selling it in 10 lb bags as the newest latest greatest deer plot seed.

I have heard of some guys that have dove hunted over some hemp fields and said the doves loved the seed.

Don't know the difference ,but deer love Sun hemp , they eat it when it's growing and then when mature it makes great cover..

I have a license to raise hemp this year. This will be my first year....so I'm by no means an expert.

I've asked the question about deer eating the plants and I've been told that deer don't care much for the plants. I suspect that if there is nothing else to eat a deer would eat a newly emerged plant, but if they are given a choice they will choose other food sources.

My plants - for oil - will be about 4 ft apart in the rows and the rows will be 8 ft wide. But for those growing for seed or fiber, the plants will be very close together. Fiber produces about 4 - 8 tons per acre on one cutting and it is a very tall, tough, woody plant so I don't believe it would be appealing to deer for either cover or bedding....

Back in the 80's I was trying to get set up for a good ole fashion deer drive in Robertson County. And ran into a feller already huntin the creek bottom I was going to. I told him be ready at 10-10:30 the drivers where going to run every deer in Oakwoods down that creek. He was packing an old 303 that still had the WW2 stalk. As I was talking he flipped open that brass cap on the stalk and out slide 3 big fatty's,he took one and a bic and fired it up. As he was hittin that dubbie for all it was worth and trying to hold it in he said "I'll be ready".

Nothing like getting good and blitzed and sitting for a deer drive. Drug use and guns, awesome.
