When I was a boy this creek was amazing to fish. What I mean by thst is big deep holes everywhere. Once coal stripping started all those big holes became far and few. Run off filled them in and never recovered. Was is valuable trade, of course. Strip mining fed a lot of families. But saying keeping a few fish to eat here and there has ruined stream fishing? Yea stringer fulls will, but not what we doing.

The 70's I remember was ditch lines full of trash and creeks too. I think littering laws started in the 80's with the outrage over foam big Mac boxes.
I remember, in the 70's me and my Dad floated an easy ky stream. When we got home we realized the water had eat the finish off our new sculling oar from Kmart. I remember Big Sandy had an oil sheen on the water at all times and coal windrows on the shorelines.

Absolutely!

People dumped everything in the creeks.

I think it’s far less to do with trash than it is with chemicals associated with mining and other such things. It’s getting better slowly though.

It was worse back then ,than now, every time it rained ,and the creek got up, you could watch people shove their stuff ,that wouldn’t burn into the creek.I don’t think much has changed now ,you still see the milk jugs and garbage go down the creeks.
Not to get off topic here ,you taking that boy out ,this weekend mud.

Can’t blame it all on coal, coal silt filled up a lot ,but look at all the sand and soil that’s cut out of these creeks, from nowhere for the water to go.If you’ve ever turtle hunted ,the beaver creeks or trot lined the big sandy ,there’s more raw sewage going straight into the water , than crooked politicians in Washington.
I hope you catch a bunch ,this weekend mud.
