Coronavirus: Satellite image shows rise in sulfur dioxide levels over Wuhan hinting at mass cremations

A satellite image showing high levels of sulfur dioxide at the center of the coronavirus outbreak in China has raised eyebrows across the Internet, with several claiming it could be a sign of mass cremations.

In recent days, satellite maps have displayed alarming levels of SO2 mass around Wuhan — the Chinese city suspected to be the origin of the deadly virus. Furthermore, high levels of SO2 were also found over the city of Chongqing which is also under quarantine.

Large amounts of sulfur dioxide are released when bodies are cremated or when medical waste is incinerated, scientists say. But a Twitter user raised an alarm after finding the elevated levels of the compound on a weather app, suggesting that it could be the result of dead bodies being burned on the outskirts of the city.

The elevated levels of sulfur dioxide could be a legitimate concern, especially after the government has been repeatedly accused of concealing a higher-than-reported death toll with mass cremations (Windy)
The Chinese government has ordered bodies of coronavirus victims to be cremated immediately upon death. They have also decreed that funerals must be low profile in order to prevent large public gatherings.

Earlier this month, China's National Health Commission advised that the bodies should be "cremated close by and immediately."

The elevated levels of sulfur dioxide could be a legitimate concern, especially after the government has been repeatedly accused of concealing a higher-than-reported death toll with mass cremations. That said, high levels of the gas in Wuhan are consistent with a high number of cremations in the city.

A screenshot from a live map by Czech-based weather service Windy shows SO2 levels in Wuhan at a staggering 1,350 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) over the weekend. To put things in perspective, a dosage of 500 µg/m3 of SO2 should not be exceeded for more than 10 minutes, as per the World Health Organization (WHO). A 15-minute exposure to 533 µg/m3 sulfur dioxide is considered to be 'high' by the UK government.

While the SO2 levels were lower on Monday, Wuhan and Chongqing still stood out on the map when compared to the rest of China. The map suggested that parts of Wuhan still had concentrations above 500 µg/m3.

Nonetheless, we cannot directly attribute the rise in SO2 levels to the coronavirus crisis, especially since the compound is also produced as a result of burning fossil fuels and a number of other biochemical processes.

But reports from Wuhan are hard to verify since the city remains in lockdown with 11 million people in quarantine.

However if you are neither there is a very good chance you will be fine..

Maybe. Since this is a weaponized virus, not sure they will disclose all the parts to it. Ancient Chinese secret...
