I really hate all the ticky tack hand check foul calls. It really slows the game down and forces teams to go deep in the bench. If I am paying for tickets, I don't want to watch Randle and Poythress ride the pine. I want to see them on the court. If they want to call games like this, then increase the foul count by one more like the NBA.

Impressed with how the cats came together in the 2nd half and made it a game. Randle is a great player.

Once the players get used to how the games are going to be called I think the games will be fun to watch with all the scoring but it will need to be one those things you've got to let go at the end of a game if it's close.

As much as I want the Cats to win all the games I was glad they lost tonight. If your going to lost now is the time and they lost to a GOOD TEAM BUT NOT BY MUCH.

In fact if they had made more free throws they would have won.

Now a loss is out of the way and they have been brought back down to earth. I'm not worried at all. They will be a better team because of this game.

Payback is a worst bitch in March.

You can't get there from here.

It will get better. They just have to get use to moving their feet and playing actual defense. I'm glad they made the rule change. It was getting where you could mug a guy and not get called for the foul. 15 years ago it was this way. Hands Off!

I believe the NCAA is trying to put offense/scoring back as the main staple of college basketball again. Many were complaining about how physical the game had gotten, and the entertainment aspect had suffered because of it. I think you will eventually see the scoring averages of most teams increase once they get accustomed to the new points of emphasis.

Thug teams like UL and IU will suffer because of it if their games are called as tightly.

Saw where IU only won by 1 against LIU Brooklyn, at home. UL took care of business though and comfortably so Tricky Rick's probably got them fairly adjusted to the new rules. We'll see.

You guys are getting a taste of what we have dealt with FOR YEARS in the OVC, as far as ticky tack hand checks. Seriously, in all 3 of Murray's games so far, the rules change looks like last year, other than I have yet to see the first charge. UK must have looked like I figured they would, but picked it up in the 2nd. Now I didn't see it, but this seems like a great sign for you Cats fans.

What hurt UK was inexperience. They didn't box out, they didn't get back in transition, they didn't help on defense, and they can't hit free throws. All of that is teachable and will improve. Had they done just one of those things at a rate of an average college team, they win by a good margin. James Young gave up so many points, I stopped counting. The Harrison twins let their man get a step on them almost every time. WCS plays behind his man in the paint, and will only get the rebound IF he can snatch it from over their head.

The fouls... These aren't the hand checks that people are used to. It's putting your hand ON the player and leaving it there. You have a guy post you up and you put your hand on his back and leave it there for more than a second, it's a foul. You don't have to push the player, or smack, or grab them. You simply have to put you hand ON them.

I personally like the new foul rule. It will work in UK's favor if they can hit their FT's. UK had far fewer fouls called on them. UK players are going to be able to take their man one on one in most cases, so they are going to get the foul calls. They put 2 or 3 guys on Randle, and he went to the line all night long. They just need to hit the FT's, because they left like 15 points on the floor. These new rules are going to be most evident when teams are evenly matched and the game is physical. You won't really see the effects in most games when good teams are playing cupcakes.

It's not just post defense Art, but hand checks and a rigid definition of the foul/charge rule. I guess it's easier for me to see the impact it has on the way perimeter defense is played, in a guard dominated league. HAND CHECKS are over. The charge is over. The one thing about the inexperienced refs, typical of mid-major bball, is they already called way more fouls than the more experienced ones. It's like a license to blow you whistle. I didn't pay the chunk of money I paid to listen to a whistle blow every trip.

I know, but the place you keep seeing it over and over is in the post. There were several times where fouls were called, and everyone knew the rules, but were still shocked. It's probably been decades since that type of foul has been called in ANY conference. I still think there will be charge calls, but IMO, the charge call had become too overly used. It got to the point IMO where 90% of charge calls were questionable and people were sliding into position late and still getting the call. A proper charge call is easy to make, but the NCAA had made it too subjective.

You know I really thought MSU would kill us on the boards, but we out-rebounded them by double digits, which was a pleasant surprise. We just didnt get the most important defensive rebound of the game...and like you said that can be chalked up as inexpereince. They were ball watching instead of finding a body to put a butt into somebody.

FRE THROWS FREE THROWS FREE THROWS,even tho the Cats weren't up to snuff played like freshman if they would have hit 50% of their free throws State was beat and Izzo knew it.
Why is it that Coaches don't think free throws aren't important anymore?
Hated to see the Cats lose but it showed that as bad as they played they lasted with a more experienced older team.THIS LOSE WILL HELP THEM.Look out down the road they just learned their not invincible.
