Ain't that the truth.

I really hate all the ticky tack hand check foul calls. It really slows the game down and forces teams to go deep in the bench. If I am paying for tickets, I don't want to watch Randle and Poythress ride the pine. I want to see them on the court. If they want to call games like this, then increase the foul count by one more like the NBA.
It will get better. They just have to get use to moving their feet and playing actual defense. I'm glad they made the rule change. It was getting where you could mug a guy and not get called for the foul. 15 years ago it was this way. Hands Off!
What hurt UK was inexperience. They didn't box out, they didn't get back in transition, they didn't help on defense, and they can't hit free throws. All of that is teachable and will improve. Had they done just one of those things at a rate of an average college team, they win by a good margin. James Young gave up so many points, I stopped counting. The Harrison twins let their man get a step on them almost every time. WCS plays behind his man in the paint, and will only get the rebound IF he can snatch it from over their head.
The fouls... These aren't the hand checks that people are used to. It's putting your hand ON the player and leaving it there. You have a guy post you up and you put your hand on his back and leave it there for more than a second, it's a foul. You don't have to push the player, or smack, or grab them. You simply have to put you hand ON them.
I personally like the new foul rule. It will work in UK's favor if they can hit their FT's. UK had far fewer fouls called on them. UK players are going to be able to take their man one on one in most cases, so they are going to get the foul calls. They put 2 or 3 guys on Randle, and he went to the line all night long. They just need to hit the FT's, because they left like 15 points on the floor. These new rules are going to be most evident when teams are evenly matched and the game is physical. You won't really see the effects in most games when good teams are playing cupcakes.
It's not just post defense Art, but hand checks and a rigid definition of the foul/charge rule. I guess it's easier for me to see the impact it has on the way perimeter defense is played, in a guard dominated league. HAND CHECKS are over. The charge is over. The one thing about the inexperienced refs, typical of mid-major bball, is they already called way more fouls than the more experienced ones. It's like a license to blow you whistle. I didn't pay the chunk of money I paid to listen to a whistle blow every trip.
