I think i attended on Lake Cumberland @1958 or so...maybe a year later. Can still hear Preacher banging that piano after supper and and giving the best ever rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In". Earned the Voyaguer patch, and it was a great experience to be at that camp in that era.

Any body on here go there back in the fifties?

We have sent a few, but not consistently.

Thread actually reminded me that we need to start again.

My Dad went in the 50's. Who's Preacher? I'll tell him about your story and see if it rings a bell with him.

I went 3 years in the mid 70's.

Thx. Got my boys involved a few yrs ago in their early teens, part of their Christmas. Give em $200 each (think that's what camp cost). They read the campers bio, pick one out and pay for em. They look forward to it each year. A win win.

Preacher was a cook in the mess hall. A huge Black man who could play a piano like JERRY LEE LEWIS and belt out church hymns in a loud bass voice that rang the whole building. When the evening meal was about over invariably the campers who had been the the camp in prior years would begin the repetitive chant "WE WANT PREACHER" and not stop until PREACHER left the kitchen, apron and all, and came to the piano in the mess hall. All preceeded by a loud clapping ovation. . He would play several hymns , but When the Saints Come Marching In was the final one and everyone in the building was standing and singing with him. If you heard it you would remember it
