Anyone ever built their own cabin or restored and older cabin? Would love to have one on our farm.

We'd love to have one too. Several threads have been posted on this forum of folks who have built hunting cabins....Some are quite enviable.

Man, just visited a guys cabin. AMAZING! He had bought the log cabin disassembled and stored it for a decade or more then had it put up and surrounded by new constructions and it is incredible. The original cabin was square logs and he left the ID tags on each. Had an architect do all the plans so its pretty detailed custom cabinets and doors on 118 acres near the Cumberland R and Wolf Creek. Simply outstanding.

I would love to find an old one and tear it down. I have looked on Facebook and craiglist with no luck. Anyone know of any for sale?

Old Log Cabins are High Dollar now. I watched a crew disassemble one on my mail route a few years ago. They worked a week on it, numbered every piece, loaded it on 2 Eighteen wheelers and sent it to Texas.

Best one I ever saw was on Highway 461 near the county line, but it burned from a Lightening strike about 25 years ago..

Those amish made building make pretty good cabins. I bought one and put at my pond mainly to store fishing tackle, boat paddles and life jackets. Its stud wall construction, so could easily be insulated and finnished out, as time and money permits. You could pimp it out as basic, or extravagent as you want.

5-6 years ago we built my mom and dad a log cabin to live in. If I were ever gonna do one I would go the route they went. Essentially picked out a shell size (outer walls) and had a fella mill pine logs with round front and flat back as well as a half inch or inch deep tongue and groove top and bottom. Damn thing went together like linkin logs in a day. Everything on the inside was framed and drywalled but the entirety of the perimeter of the house was stained wood logs. Its pretty sweet. Logs were basically stacked and screwed down with 9 inch lag screws.

I think I would prefer the wood over the drywall interior

There is exposed log on the inside around the perimeter of the house. The only drywall is the framed bathroom, laundry, office, and bedrooms. So part of every room has at least one log wall. I guess they could have gone with t and g wood instead of drywall but they preferred to have a little break up.

I built this back in 2008. Sold it in 2015 and built a brick house back in my home county. Stain that thing a time or 2 and you will never want to do it again.

I wanted to own one my whole adult life. Then last year I was part of building one and I can now say I would never own one. If you are dead set on building one it better have a crawl space or full basement.
