My grandfather is from the Morgantown/ Butler co. Area and i hunted his farm in college '00-'05. It was the best big deer hunting I have experienced. The place has been hunted very lightly since. My question is; is the hunting worth a hoot up in that area anymore. I know it got drilled by ehd, but it is even worth hunting for big deer? What have you guys seen the past few seasons. Im trying to decide if its worth the time and money investment. Wonder how many years it take to get back to where it was...? Thanks guys.

In short yes there are good deer.

But where and what access you have makes a big difference in what you experience.

My land isn't worth a hoot until late October and biggest deer I've seen or got pics of there is mid 130s.

I do much better in other parts of the state like inside Jefferson county if you can find spots.

But there are also several bears and mountain lions. Really too dangerous to hunt.

Not to mention the meth labs and pot fields everywhere.

A bear high on meth and pot is dangerous.

According to recent photos, Butler Co has bear too. Been a couple weeks but they sure had good photos of the bear. Now meth labs and pot, yeah those are still around too.

Thanks for the peanut gallery responses! I was raised in TN, so big green pot fields, toothless meth heads, and bears in the back yard are what I am used to.

Im am, however, not used to ehd as it has never affected any of the places I hunt. Pops said he thinks it killed about most of the mature deer back in 07.

I personally wouldn't let the EHD outbreak in 07 detour me from investigating / hunting the farm. Yes... it did affect the deer numbers but, EHD did not kill every deer. It's been my experience that counties affected the most have rebounded for the better and are producing trophy deer. Make a trip... hang some cameras and inventory the summer herd. Make your decision based on that info... not an assumption. If all else fells, send me an invite and I will kill a big deer off the property for you... Yes, I'm just that nice!
