Busted up and Broke off Racks

Buddy just got back from Iowa, said he's never seen so many broken buck ever. Buck he shot had 7 broken tines on it. I typically don't see em get broken up til now in the second rut here.

Something I noticed this year and it probably has nothing to do with this topic. This is the first year my woods doesn’t have a single buck rub in it. I’ve been looking since mid September.

The wife passed a solid 8 that had the entire left side of his rack broken off. Like down to a knub... saw numerous scrubs that had all kinds of broken issues. The buck I ended up killing ~130" had his right brow completely broken off (and it was fresh) and a piece of his G3 on the same side. Honestly looking back at cameras, we had more bucks across 2 farms that had something broken off than did not... Definitely odd. I'd agree with others had to have some correlation to the drought during antler growing period. On the bright side this did several deer a favor by giving them a pass they otherwise would not have gotten from most. Camera's still taking inventory & will continue to monitor.

Damn near every buck on my farm has a broken tine of some sort. One of my bigger ones broke entire right side off above brow tine. I’ve never seen anything like it. Only thing I can come up with is how dry it was and it made their racks so brittle. Some of mine broke shedding velvet. Some broke when the sparring began. It was the damnest thing watching a buck be fine one day and the next day a g3 would be missing.

I’ve been seeing the same thing with all the bucks I’ve been after. Sucks this guy broke off a brow tine but I’d still shoot him.

I got plenty of them, but the one side is even with their head, for the most part, might stick up a inch or 2

This deer on the left is a prime example. Broke 3ish inches or so off left g3, inch or so on left brow and 2ish inches on right g3. Deer was perfectly fine in velvet. Idk….


Edit: After further investigation, I believe the tip of his left g2 may be broke off too…

I'll jump on the bandwagon ! The buck I killed was a mainframe 10. His G3 and G4 had tips busted off on right side, his main beam was busted off at G4 on left side. This was the only buck I saw that was busted up.

Saw one this morning. Solid 8. Right side broke at brow. Left side broken G3. I’d probably shot him had he not been busted up. Big body.

I like to shoot bigger bucks, simply because I get more bang for the buck when I have them processed. Not into the horn porn. If he’s a nice mature buck and he’s still got enough antler sticking up to be legal, broken off or not, I’m gonna try to put him down.
