This will be my first year turkey hunting. What is a good call for a beginner like me?

I would say a box call is the easiest to consistently operate at a basic level. Also look into the push button yelp calls, super simple. My first bird was killed off a push button yelper.

Get a box call and watch youtube videos on how to make the various calls.

Good luck.

A slate or a box call. Save the mouth call for later. You can kill a turkey with just a yelp. I've done it and i'm a beginner.

More important is a good instructional video or CD. Knowing when and how much to call is more important than making all the different sounds.

I agree with what has been posted, you can't go wrong with a Box call. As a beginner your best bet is to find someone who has Turkey hunted alot and tag along on a hunt and learn from their experience.

From my experience the biggest issue beginners have when trying to learn how to call is understanding the cadence a real hen makes. Also, don't get frustrated if you don't sound like a world champion caller. There are many real-life hens that sound horrible compared to the way a big name champion caller sounds.

I would start out with a wooden push pull (they tend to sound better) or a pot style call like the Ol' Yeller. Just remember it's all about cadence and understanding when to keep quiet.

Box or slate is not hard to learn. The easiest I think would be push button call. It will do the calls you need and very easy to use. I think some people may think they are "beginner" but thye will call a bird and thats all that matters. You can also use it with one hand. Give it a try.

X's 2 on the push button. There are several really good sounding push button calls out there that will make every sound you need to call a bird in. Simple, yet very effective. Listen to real hens yelp on the internet, or good callers to learn cadence. When hunting, less calling > more calling.

LOL!! After probably over a decade, my Ol' Yeller and my wooden push-pull calls are still my two favorite calls. They're simple to use and actually sound pretty good. I don't try to get too fancy, just good enough to call an ole tom in. They've worked pretty well for me so far because they allow me a wide range of cadences, pitches, and volumes. I have other calls, but it seems I always end up with these two in my hands the most when in the field.

I've got an old Knight and Hale Model 114 push or pull call. Stopped in at their business one day back in the 1980's I think and picked it up. I'd read about it but couldn't find one so went to the source. It's called in many a bird and I still use it when all else fails. It's a great little call for any turkey hunter, beginner or experience. If you can find one you can't go wrong.

Box call most deffinately. Start by reading a few books on ole meleagris gallopavo and if you can take a look at youtube for audio recordings of turkeys calling so you can mimic the rhythm. Be sure to look at Spring calls now Bob McNally has one with Preston Pittman he is an amazing caller.
