Hate the dog got killed but a small dog can be a threat to cattle. I know from owning and being around cattle my whole life. I’ve had many issues with dogs thru the years. Had a small dog a couple years ago that terrorized a couple herd bulls in my bull lot. It would get in there chasing and bitting their back legs till the bulls where foaming at the mouth. Ran it off a few weeks later same dog ran both thru a 5 strand fence. Spent time fixing fence and getting bulls up. Those bulls were scared to death of dogs after that. Had another chasing a herd of close to 100 all thru the timber more than once. Very lucky none broke a leg. I did find a German Shepard once killing a calf which I know that’s not a small dog. Anymore I have very little patience with a dog around my cattle if I don’t know the dog especially if I see it running my cattle.
I get it, I really do. The part that makes this the worst is that the owner was there with his dogs and attempting to retrieve them. But they shot them anyways. To some people. It’d have been just as bad as shooting a family member. I know a few individuals, and probably some on here, that a person would’ve died one side of the fence or the other immediately afterwards.

It would not have been a good situation had it been me.

So the post says her kid had to shoot it, I’m just curious how old was the shooter? Not that the age makes it right, but just curious.
Be awful if someone’s bull caught a bb to the nutsack and became infertile

Absolutely. Our horses stomped and killed several harassing beagle dogs.

Maybe they felt it was a last resort. Maybe the cows were spooked and took off. Ever seen 100 frightened cows take off at once? Hell even 1 for that matter. It’s not good. Especially if they are approaching dangerous terrain or a fence. A scared to death cow is going through a fence no matter what. If they were calling off the dog and the dog wasn’t responding and the intensity of the situation was increasing, what do you do? I wasn’t there and have no idea, but blanket statements are useless unless we know more. A cow is worth a lot more than a beagle. I’ve ingrained the idea to my family that if our dogs leave our property or our immediate control….they are likely to be shot. Not a good situation but judging from posts, it doesn’t sound like they just shot the dog without any provocation

You priced a champion beagle with papers lately? Even their own statements in the comments on the post was that the dog was running towards her when she shot it. It was no longer a threat to the cattle. She shot it at that point because “she felt threatened”. They kept bringing up the problems they’d had for 3 years with the neighbors dogs. Problem with that is. It wasn’t the neighbors dog. The neighbors dogs are all 50-75lb mutt breed dogs, not beagles.

You can eat a cow. Rabbit hunting is a hobby. I don’t know the ins and the outs because none of us were there.

It absolutely sounds like the dog was shot based on previous experiences with other dogs............. I understand you don't hunt with dogs, so I understand your confusion.

Maybe and if that’s the case, this is a real shame. I’ve also seen scenarios where things went too far and dogs should have been shot. We weren’t there so we simply don’t know.

I hope this works out for them better than it did for Daddy's friend several years ago. They were hunting my cousin's farm, which borders a guy's land that was raising deer. He had about 10 acres fenced in(high fence) for his deer. At that time, he was just selling deer, not selling hunts. Dogs ran a rabbit onto his land, and the dude shot one of the beagles. When they got over there, the man had drug the beagle inside his deer fence. Daddy said it was blatantly office. Words ensued, and the sheriff was called. The deputy said since the dog was inside the fence, the guy had a right to shoot the dog. Completely ignored, and wouldn't look at, the trail of blood from 20 yards away where the guy drug the dog into the fenced area. Daddy's buddy told him that he'd see him sometime, and get his own justice. Daddy went back to hunt there the next year with another guy. The shooter came over and talked to them while they were hunting. He commented that he'd hate to shoot another dog for running his deer. Kelly (the guy daddy was with) told him if he shot his dog, he'd beat the F*** out of him. There'd be no sheriff involved, and then asked him if he understood. Dude gave Kelly a jar of honey.
