Beagle Shot while hunting

I find it odd many on this thread that are ready to fight are the same ones yelling SSS when dogs are running loose on there deer lease. cant have it both ways. by no means do I condone the shooting of the dog but hopefully the hunters learned a lesson on teaching their dogs to come when called. all dogs can learn that basic command and it is your job to keep the dogs on the property you have permission to hunt.
It is different when a rabbit hunter is hunting with dogs. The difference is that when deer hunting, the dogs they are talking about are regular old house pets that are let run all over the place anytime they want. They are not hunting but just letting their pets run lose all the time.
Were the beagle owners at fault? Maybe but who knew they were going to get shot.
Did the shooter kill the dog out of meanness? Probably
The shooter probably tried to justify their actions by "claiming" dogs damaged their livestock in the past. They can make all kinds of stuff up to make their actions look justifiable.

The beagles I have been around would rather die than come off a hot track. Well minded dogs and highly intelligent. Just driven to run. You can have a dog that knows every command in the book and follow them to a t and some really good dogs lose that on a hot track. Some can be toned back though.

This. It’s almost impossible to call dogs off a hot track. They had just watched the rabbit cross the cow pasture. He was shocking and toning his dogs trying to get them to come to him.

Many years ago my beagles ran a rabbit around a farmhouse and when they looped around the other side, one of them (still running the rabbit) was carrying a chicken. I yelled at her and she dropped it and it ran off. I got them out of there!

Years ago, nobody cared where you hunted, or where the dogs ran. But times have changed. I never turn my pack out where they might cause problems, or near road traffic, etc. In summertime, when I am out at daybreak, I try to be respectful of those who might be within earshot of the hounds running.

If those young folks had been told to keep their hounds off the property and allowed it to happen again, they are partially responsible, in my opinion, however, it could certainly have been handled in a better way by the landowners. Just call the law and let them deal with it!

I hate dogs that are allowed to run loose. They get into a lot of mischief. Good neighbors keep dogs under control.

have had some great beagles that call and hit the tone on the collar and they would come right back. I promise it can be trained most people dont because they think it will ruin the dog. Or they just dont want to put in the time.

I’m sure it can be trained if a person wants to invest the time. But in my 38 years of rabbit hunting experience I’ve never seen or known of anyone attempting to call their dogs off a hot track without their being extreme danger at hand such as nearing a highway or following an undesirable animal. Never have I seen them called off a track just for the sake of training them to stop.

ETA:
He was shocking and toning them to get them back. It just evidently wasn’t working fast enough for the bitch that shot his dog.

it wasnt working because they hadnt been trained to do it. thats my point if you wait till the dog is in danger to teach it you waited to long we trained them because of roads but if you wait till they are running across the road its to late.

I never try to stop mine when they are running a rabbit. I run too many for that. I have been known to stop cars a time or two, but it’s always on a remote backroad where people aren’t in much of a hurry anyway. I stopped an old couple on their way to church one Sunday morning and they got a big kick out of seeing 16 beagles in full cry crossing in front of their truck. I imagine they had a story to tell when they got to church!

Just a thought here, not arguing with anyone or trying to hurt anyone’s feelings either.I wouldn’t shoot a dog ,for being somewhere it’s not supposed to be,period .But had this been a coon hound ,chasing a coon at night and got shot ,would you feel the same way, toward the shooter.
Absolutely. Unless a dog is causing an immediate threat to a person or animal it is capable of harming, I have zero desire to kill one. A 15lb beagle certainly ain’t a threat to 1500lb cow

Hate the dog got killed but a small dog can be a threat to cattle. I know from owning and being around cattle my whole life. I’ve had many issues with dogs thru the years. Had a small dog a couple years ago that terrorized a couple herd bulls in my bull lot. It would get in there chasing and bitting their back legs till the bulls where foaming at the mouth. Ran it off a few weeks later same dog ran both thru a 5 strand fence. Spent time fixing fence and getting bulls up. Those bulls were scared to death of dogs after that. Had another chasing a herd of close to 100 all thru the timber more than once. Very lucky none broke a leg. I did find a German Shepard once killing a calf which I know that’s not a small dog. Anymore I have very little patience with a dog around my cattle if I don’t know the dog especially if I see it running my cattle.
