DANVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Danville police say a man is dead after a crossbow bolt accidentally discharged and struck him.

Danville police are conducting a death investigation on Hartland Drive. (WKYT)
Officers responded to the scene Monday morning at Hartland Drive. Police say they found 46-year-old Jimmy J. Smith with the bolt wound to his upper torso.

Investigators believe Smith was target shooting in his backyard when the bolt accidentally discharged. Police are not suspecting foul play.

The Boyle County Coroner's Office responded to the scene along with Danville police and other agencies. The townhomes are located near Bellevue Cemetery

I heard about someone shooting themselves while climbing into a stand a few years ago. I guess the safety was off?

Been thinking about this. How in the world do you have a loaded crossbow pointed at yourself and then actuate the trigger mechanism? Or even if it suddenly fired, why would you ever have it pointed at yourself? I’m ignorant when it comes to crossbows. Is there anyway the bolt could have ricocheted?

I have been shooting one now since 2012 and I absolutely cannot imagine any scenario in how you could shoot yourself with one. All of the modern ones have a safety design that is going to keep them from discharging but I'm sure there's a way to do anything.

Can't figure out how this even happened. The article is pathetic. Was it cocked, placed on a chair pointing down range and then he walked in front of it inspecting the target? Who knows??

I’d say there’s a second person involved in this and not releasing that info... may be someone under age / child that accidentally shot him.

As the article simply states accidentally hit or struck by a crossbow bolt ..... were all implying it was self inflicted but nowhere does it say that. Just not a very well written article.

I read an article that said apparently accidental self inflicted. Seems mighty strange. Even if it was dropped and some how went off that should'nt be self inflicted. Sounds like for whatever reason the guy pointed it at himself and the trigger got hit. People do dumb stuff sometimes
