I've been there when they were froze solid and pumping to keep open water to hold birds. 23 and 24 had open water but they weren't hunting it to hold birds. We were in another blind in Terel field. Snowing like hell. Killed them good when it was snowing. Full bodies on the ice. Not much of a hole busted out. They were dry feeding the dry ridges for beans. When the snow stopped and the birds could see the live birds dry feeding the ridges it was all pass shooting. So yeah, having open water would have been nice but they didn't let anyone hunt it that day.Guess I’m showing my ignorance…I can’t imagine 108k ducks there early in the season.
If everything is froze, high numbers of birds and you have open water, you will kill birds. That’s waterswatting 101 everywhere I’ve hunted.
Not sure what you mean by the last part, when you couldn’t move around the unit?
I think the highest survey count I’ve seen down there was 90k. Everything had been locked up and they were coming back north. It was top 10 favorite hunts and I didn’t even have a gun.
What I mean by in the past you couldn't move around the unit is before they had blocked it off into units you had to draw for an actual blind and you hunted from that blind, period. The exception was you may have a spot that had a dry field pit and a stand up blind over water and could hunt either if you wished.
A thaw is a good time to hit it.
And like I said, I've left out of there and not seen many flying at all only for them to all be huddled up on the north section of front slough sitting on the ice and they have kept a 1 acre or so hole open. They just tuck a head under their wing and rest till stuff starts to thaw and open back up.
I like that you can move around. It just takes some time to learn some of those bigger units to get an idea where you want to be at shooting light. Not only where to go but how to get there and can you get there. Low water obviosly complicates it as well. I need to spend more time over there in the off-season and walk or boat it.
