Ground counts say Ballard can hunt 7 parties on the opener. I'd guess that's how many they have drawn. That's a good number for ducks for the conditions given too.

I'm missing the "7 parties" part.

In the first paragraph:
"Ballard WMA does have enough water now to hunt all 14 parties when it opens on December 7th".

Are you just saying that 44k birds on the WMA isn't enough to hunt more than 7 parties?

I'll be on Ballard the 10th and 11th. 2 of our party will be down Thursday night looking for a walk-up or charitable opportunity for Friday.

It'll be my first Western KY duck hunt!

The numbers of birds they are holding can be made irrelevant depending upon conditions.

Have been over there when they are holding around 90k and they not fly. Have had good hunts when they are holding less than 30k.

Depending upon when they do the counts matters too. Have seen birds pour in from across the river al morning. Seen the opposite too.

If they are filling new stuff I would want to try to hunt that fresh water if I could.

That all makes sense, thanks!

Shame they have wings...lol

Having not hunted Ballard before, I wasn't sure what was meant by the statement.

I must've changed the Dec 7th to 7 parties. You're correct. 14 parties/spots available. My bad.

44k is enough. 20k can be enough. Sometimes 108k isn't enough. Its all about conditions and if they decide to move.

Thanks for clearing the 7 parties up…I tried wrapping my brain around that since I saw it first posted…thought we were back to the good ol’ (boy) days.

Serious question…have you really hunted down there with 108k count and not done well? I get the premise, but with those numbers Wprebreck would stack em up.

Yes. Go on a full moon with clear skies, when it is warm early in the season or when everything is frozen and they are all sitting on the ice on front slough taking turns paddling like hell to keep a hole open. Back when you actually drew your blind you could end up in a spot they just didn't want that day.
