1 of the 8s in ky I caught was in private waters and some have said to me it doesn’t count. I’m proud of it but I also disclose that clause whenever I talk about it.
My best 2 on public waters were on back to back days in ky. I’m very proud of those fish. I also lost a 10+ on chick in 2019. That fish still haunts me. To be honest I’d bet the house it was over 12 but it never got in the boat to be clear
Speaking of line..... I bought some Sufix Advance 6 lb for crappie poles. Never tried it , has anyone??
This thread has exploded with good debate, thanks everyone! i might cruise over to cabelas today to look at line and pick up a few baits
before I go buy anything, I’d love to hear your opinion for what line you would use if this is your setup. This is my favorite reel on my new rod. I need to study up on gear ratios/rod sizes more in the future but today, what do you think for this setup? I bought the rod intending to throw a lot of crank baits with it, I hope it would be sufficient for that. Rod is a 7’2” Medium Heavy, moderate action. Reel is 7.0:1 ratio
We sure hijacked thread! Lol. That’s a good rod for crankbaits. Don’t know anything about the reel but it’s funny that it says burner at 7.0 ratio. Heck they make gear ratios in 10 range now. I usually stay around 6-7 ratio but I do have a pitchin setup with a 8.1. Remember Red for winter/prespawn crankbaits colors.
I like suffix a lot. Just recently started using Advance but haven’t had any problems with it. I’ve used Suffix elite 8lb for spinning rods and never broke off a fish. That includes some big hybrids.
Well dang lol, I’ve probably had that reel for 10+ years now, looks like it was quantum’s flagship in 2006, I’d say technology has advanced a lot in those 15 years! Thanks for the color tips
For crank baits, you’re gonna want a slower reel especially this time of year. Good rod for squarebills, jerkbaits, topwaters. You could get away with that reel for jerkbaits and topwater but I prefer a 6:1 for crankbaits, or you’re gonna be reeling painfully slow to not be moving the bait too fast in these 30-40* water temps. On all my jerkbait and cranking rods I throw 12# flouro. Specifically seaguar red label. Flouro sinks so it allows you to get a little bit deeper with your bait.
I throw crankbaits on G Loomis crankbait rods using Suffix mono, usually 10 pound. Sometimes I’ll throw bigger squarebills on a G Loomis IMX 843 with 14 pound mono. One noteable exception is that I throw Rapala Shad Raps on a Shimano Crucial drop shot spinning road with 10 pound Power Pro with an 8 pound Suffix leader.
Yep, I use lefty reels and 5:1 and slower are almost impossible to come by. 6:1 is a happy medium where I can still burn one if need be. 6xDs and bigger cranks I reel as fast as I can.
