I was reading RL Webbs post on the poacher, and reminded me of a couple that I had seen in magazines, years ago, I remember this guy Owen Walton was his name, he had some kind of deal with Nikon and Yamaha, I used to look at that ad a lot, The other was Kirt Darnner , he had all these Hugh mule deer, and advertised rem 700 and corlokt ammo and since thats what I used, I read his ads a lot, back then no internet or social media, bout the only way to see stuff like that was in a magazine

I remember that Remington add. Don’t remember the poaching or any scandal, but I don’t doubt it. Sure is a good looking rifle though. I’d love to have an older Remington 700 in 7MM, 30.06, or 25.06. I’m really starting to be interested in a 25.06 caliber rifle.

yeah RL I still have my 700 adl made in 78, There is a lot on Kurt, I hated that to, I always followed his stuff in magazines, as I stated earlier, I guess because of the 700, I been shootin 760 and 7600 last few years in carbine 06, I know I have hunted with then7600 carbine synthetic the last 4 years, but I will always have a place in my heart for the old wood 700 ,

I really hope Remington arms is resurrected by the new owners. Remington is an iconic American brand with a long history. I think some folks look down on Remington now and I can see why with the issues they’ve had over the last 20 odd years. But those older 700s are some the finest rifles made and rival anything, custom or stock, made today. Heck even with all their recent issues some of the new 700s are still good rifles. Read some of the stuff on the 700 AWR, it’s still a very sought after rifle. And if you’re someone who likes to tinker or customize rifles, there’s a ton of stuff available for the 700 action.

I have shot remingtons all my life, My dad had a old remington 20 guage made on the Browning pattern, like the A5, he quail hunted with, that I still have, he also killed several bucks with it with slugs, killed a monster 9 point, that field dressed, 260 . He then bought a 742. I have always hunted with a 700 till the last few years, been using 7600 carbine. That old 3 screw trigger, was in my opinion best trigger ever came out on a stock rifle.

I have that magazine somewhere that showed Owen on the front of it sitting on his 4 wheeler. What always struck me as a little odd was he didn’t look very happy in that picture.
Seems I remember Darnner’s downfall was, he was caught moving wildlife across state lines without the proper credentials. Think it involved a very large bull elk. Was Rampola ever implicated of any wrongdoing on that supposed WR whitetail? Seems there was quite a bit of controversy around that as well.

Don't recall anything was proven one way or another on Rompola. Supposedly he signed an agreement with Hanson that he wouldn't advertise/call his deer a world record until after someone else beat out Hanson's score.
