I gave up multibladed shaving contraptions last year and I now shave with a gillette double edge razor and use a soap and brush instead of canned goo. My shaves are better smoother and I have less irritation and ingrown hairs. I have also gave up going to get my hair cut by girls and have a good barber now. I have some straights but they need to be honed by someone who has the right stones.
I sure agree with you there. I can still remember all the times I went with dad to get my hair cut at the "barber shop". Deer, boar, duck , and pronghorn mounts on the wall. Sports illustrated and field and stream magazines to read. I'm lucky to live within a stones throw of a real barber shop that has been open for years. And thats where I take my son to get his hair cut even though he is only 3. No fancy kids cuts for my little man. Hopefully he will look back and fondly remember the trips to the barber shop with dad the same as I do.
I'm in the same boat, for the same reason. I can grow a pretty impressive pornstache, outside of that I can't even grow good sideburns. What I do have is like a wire brush though. I use a double edge and Barbasol. $1.80 for 10 blades.
my barber is in his 40th year of cutting hair I believe he said. $6 for men, $5 for kids and folks over 65, .50 cents for a can of pop..plenty of cattle and feed talk..
I sure as heck need to find a good alternative...anyone seen the price of replacement blades lately for the many fancy 3-4 bladed contraptions out there today. Good grief...$15-$20 for about 4 replacements. Screw gas...get my blade cost down dang it...!!! Lol
Buy an old double edge razor on Ebay, then boil it when you get it. Blades are about 18 cents apiece. If you get and adjustable razor you can set it to whatever kind of beard you have. You will have to shave twice every time though, it won't clean up a 3 day growth in one swipe like the new ones do. You'll only get 3-5 shaves out of the blades, but at that price you'll be alright.
I prolly only go through about 6-8 blades a year shaving 2x a week. But yeah, they are ridiculously expensive.
I've been using the Family dollar brand "Triple blade razor" for the last several years and couldn't be happier with them. My beard grows in super thick and I still get 3 or 4 shaves out of them and the price is super cheap. Last time I looked at the price of the name brand razors I about had a stroke! lol.
Just bought me another straight . a German made one for 26.90 on ebay Like new WWII era . still with the original box .
I shave every morning before work, and at that time, my beard is small stubble from the day before. When I do that, I will usually quite a bit of wear out of a razor. But if I let my beard grow out over the three days off. I get one maybe two shaves with one razor most of the time if I can keep the blades clear of hair. The one thing I hate is that I haven't found a razor yet that can keep from getting clogged with facial hair when I shave. One thing I have been told is if you dry off a the blades of a razor after using it, that will extend the life of it. I don't know how true that is, but someone told me that once.
