This time a Winchester model 37. Somebody has already stripped and stained the wood at least once. First things first. That butt plate and spacer no longer fit the wood. So I use a cabinet scraper for such things. I have to put an edge on it each time I use it. A screwdriver shank or honing steel does the trick. Protect the wood with duct tape and go to town. The shavings show how much it was proud of the wood. The spacer and butt plate can be polished to almost like new when off the gun. A couple of screws will need the old "tooth pick trick" to tighten them up when reassembling.

A cabinet scraper is the only way I have found to get a butt plate to match the contours of an old gun. Especially one that has been worked on before...

PHEW!!! I don't know what the last guy used but steel wool, acetone, mineral spirits, or paint thinner won't touch it.
I guess I'll have to get some aggressive paint stripper next...

What’s the trick? Give the screw something to bite in bored out stocks?

A match stick or tooth pick in a wallered out hole with a dab of yellow wood glue. Its just enough to hold tight without running the risk of cracking the wood.

Finally! Some gel type citrus stripper. Applied heavy, then wrapped in plastic over night. Getting rid of that hideous red shade that was popular for some reason...

That color always reminds me of eastern European AK 47s for some reason...
