Another senseless treestand death

I’m wondering if you guys wear a harness while working off a ladder at home? I have when on my barn roof but not normal ladders. At work we must use one if we get over 4 ft off the ground. A guy I know just recently shattered his arm and elbow from a ladder kicking out.

Ive said this several times over the years, but my neighbor died in a treestand fall. He got me interested in archery and hunting many years ago.
He was able to bless his wife with a substantial life insurance check. But 5 years later his lonely widow was stabbed to death by a gold Digging boyfriend that didn't take being broke up with well. Your family needs you, wear your harness or stay on the ground.

I use blinds or just sit down wherever I have a good view! I bought a couple hang on stands and sticks a couple yrs ago on is setting on a tree on the ground I wouldn't climb up and attach it. The other is still in the box, I would of used them if they were ladder stands.

I started hunting with a saddle two years ago. It’s the safest thing you can do when hunting from tree stands. (I always used lifelines and love them as well) At 51 years old and still recovering from open heart surgery im much weaker than I used to be. The saddle gives me confidence because you are always attached to the tree. What I have seen many times in my public service career was tree stands are routinely left in the woods for years. The straps become weakened when the tree stretches them and metal becomes weaker when it grows into the tree. You should replace those straps every year or at least loosen them check for wear or chew marks and retighten. I always tell my wife where I’m going and how long I plan to be there.

Let's be clear: There's nothing accidental about it, unless you also count Russian Roulette as an "accident."

I always use a harness with a fixed or climbing stand but admit I never do in my ladder stands. I feel it’s not needed with how you get in and out and secured while in it.

You wouldn't be the first to die from a broken ratchet strap or ladder that comes apart, etc. The manufacturers don't trust their own products enough to tell you not to wear the harness that they include in the box.

Now that I don’t do. I always check them before climbing and replace straps as needed. Probably should. I have no where to store that isn’t in the weather.

We have about 10 ladders on the property. We leave them out all year, but they are all checked before the season, and straps changed every couple years. Cheap insurance. Also, we put out lifelines on every stand. Also cheap insurance.

Same. And my ladders all have two straps and taken down annually

Maintaining them is as important as wearing a harness

Im 52 and absolutely will not ascend up a tree without a lifeline. I wear a rock climbing harness, not a conventional safety harness. This was a decision based on my own testing in my backyard. Try it for yourselves and make your own decision which you like better.

Since 2 partial knee replacements was leary about getting into stands. After about 4 yrs got stands put of outbuilding to try. Straps and safety harness had dry rotted, could break with hard pulls by hand. These webbs rot and may not even know it until too late
Sounds crazy but at 65 i am looking at treesaddles. Really appear much safer

You wonder how there weren’t more accidents years ago. Or maybe there were and we just didn’t hear about them? Don’t ever remember dad or any of his friends talk of wearing a harness and all they sat in were those chain on things with screw in steps. Or a wood platform in a tree with wood steps. I mentioned on here before, my dad actually designed an aluminum climber back in the day. Everyone and their mother came and borrowed that thing. I know no one ever strapped in.

They didn't have the internet back then. Now we can hear about every case that gets reported through local news stations across the country. lil different.
