A boy , needs to be a boy…

Had 2 of my out of state grandkids for a month now, this one has just not been exposed to the outdoor things, even though his dad was, he never took intrest, so, its just not getting passed on. Boot camp begins ! We start out making a cheesy shelter with a millitary poncho. He was not too impressed, but then again, neither was I ! 😀

So, instead of video games, we start with fire making skills. I made him do it the hardway with a ferro rod. Had to select the right tiny limbs, that were dead, and dry, gather up a bunch, and some progressively bigger kindling, then with tough, uncoordinated attempts, he finally got a flame, and nursed it into a good indian sized campfire. Ok, we cheated, and used dryer lint. Sue me.

Next, we start another little fire in my swiss army ranger volcano stove, using nothing but small sticks as fuel ( ok, dryer lint got them started) we boil enough water to cook a package of ramien noodles. The chef is stirring.

Now id just about as soon eat poop as ramien noodles, but you cook ‘em like this, and for some reason, they are much better! Note the ‘spoon’ i whittles out of a firewood chip. Crude, but effective. Little feller scarffed em down, i barely got a taste.

We did a little metal detecting as well, finding some valuable foil, and bottle caps hidden for us by campers of past. Probably prehistoric Indians of the Slappahoe Tribe.
Of course the images come up sideways, and even in different directions, even though they were all taken vertically on my Iphone. This continues to complex, and amaze me, and am clueless as to how to fix it.
One day I will join the secret society of proper picture posting, but for now, i will remain a computer illiterate moron, and take pride in it.
Before this visit is over we will do a primitive campout.

I taught my daughter how to make char cloth in a mink oil tin. She prefers making solar fire ignitions over bow drills and ferro rods.

All valuable life skills and very fun memories.

He will cherish those memories for the rest of his life. There are so many opportunities to make great memories and pass on life skills that everyone should know and sadly it seems to be a dying art. Kudos for being the kind of grandfather every kid needs.

If your taking them on an iPhone, turn it long ways, horizontal, with the volume buttons on the bottom. Problem solved.
