Hunted 2 long hollers Saturday, heard a flush from a treelap on the ridgetop, and the dog pointed on a bench, relocated in the swirling breeze, came back where she started, and ran a small looking grouse up. I passed the easy shot, will meet that bird again later. Crossed out into a second holler that was logged in 2007, and it's getting right. None seen, but I'll be back.

Today was hot and windy, hit a short holler with cover thicker than hair on a dog's back. Bout an hour hunt, none seen, called it a day.

I've been in 7 hollers this year and heard or seen 5 birds, that doing as well as I did the whole season last year. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Just got off the phone with a friend of mine. He hunted Friday and Saturday. In the two days of hunting he moved 1 grouse. Talked to another friend that hunted 5 hours Thanksgiving day and didn't move a grouse. Not looking good again this year.

I grew up hunting Grouse and have always had them around my home. Haven't seen or heard one in a couple of years now.

Chased a huge bird around the holler today. Got two points, walked it up another time. I had a gimme shot at it and my feet slipped and I ended shooting while sliding on my butt down the hill.

Only one we saw. It wasn't hurt, and we know just where he'll be in a week or two. That bird will be a 16" tail fan when we finally get him.

Hunted Sunday we flew at least three birds, I got off two shots at one, but no feathers. My young dog hunted great, along with the other two, I'll be back later in that hollow. Hunted Monday, we had five good dogs but never moved a bird, we didn't even see a field bird. Great cover, I'll try that hollow late in the year.

I saw the biggest grouse I have ever seen in my life this past weekend. I was in my truck on a dirt road and saw it sitting on dirt pile about 15 feet from the truck. I stopped and it sat there for nearly a minute before taking off. It looked like a chicken standing there. Biggest one I have ever seen. Was watching him and he flushed and I still flinched. Great fun seeing it.

Hunted 3.5 hours Thursday. Had 2 wild flushes at the same time. That was the only two we had on the hunt. Dogs hunted great but couldn't come up with anything else. Was in a good area for woodcock but I guess they are a little south.

Had to smile when I read your post. Good thing no one recorded your fall.

Got out today for a few hours in super habitat and moved nothing. Had a couple of points with some turds nearby but no bird.
