Amish hunted for coyote in the area where I saw all the tracks. He killed six in three days with seven shots. He described them as "thick" in that area.

Tried a new place to hunt on public land, 2 clearcuts I think around 1999 timber harvest. Both clearcuts are on the side of a mountain. My GSP worked the first thicket got birdy once then started downhill. About halfway down I took a right on a logging road as things started more dense my Bella went into overdrive when we cleared two down trees with no bird. As we continued down this south facing thicket she locked up on a rotten log. I looked for a bird and couldn't locate it. She relocated to the middle of the log and locked up again, I stepped in front of her and walked towards the end of it when the bird came up and straight away towards the bottom of the holler. I had my gun at ready when I found him folded him and fell about 30 yards away stone dead. Nice retrieve by my 3 year old GSP. She is starting to understand the meaning of teamwork. Continued down towards a creek at the bottom. We went 100 yards downstream into the wind in our face when Bella was putting her nose in the wind almost trying to stand on her back feed. Never seen her do this before. We went another 20 yards and to my left in the creek 12 mallards broke from the bank and into the stream. Bella heard the thundering chaos and broke cover to look out ahead of her as the ducks took off. Could if had two in one shot if they were in season. Continued for another mile, saw a nice place close to the water with beech and white oak. Looked grouse so we pressed on. We turned up into a hollar that I've never hunted. Took me about 45 mins to reach the top. Bella made big 100 yard runs up acres and down 4 times with each rotation. I was in total amazement at the energy and stamina of my girl. She is a beast and will work hard for hours. Weather was nice, saw the sunshine twice. Walked 6.8 miles and to be honest I was dragging my feet by the time we hit my vehicle. Cooking 4 leg and thighs for dinner for Bella, me 2 ultramichs for me and a rather large grouse :) and a ribeye to boot. The season is nearing an end, hopefully that wasn't the only grouse in that thicket cuz am already looking forward to next Season ImageUploadedByTapatalk1392592806.379775.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1392592825.883729.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1392592838.528594.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1392592854.470071.jpg

Hunted for 5 hours today. Had 5 flushes on 2 birds. Had points on 4 of the flushes. Killed one bird. First cover produced nothing, the second cover had the birds. They were in beech. Hope to get in a couple more hunts before season ends. Don't like the 70 degree weather they have predicted.

Hunted 4 hours today. Got up two birds with three flushes and 2 deadknocker points from my 4.5 year old. No shot opportunities as they put large maples between us each time but they'll be there again later in the week and we'll let the pup give them a try.

Hunted for 2 hours today found 4 birds for 6 flushes and brought one home with me. Had my shooting been a little sharper I would have brought home another. All of the birds were very low on the hillside feeding on beechnuts and greens.

Headed to Lewis County today. Stepped out of the truck into 8-10 inches of snow. Fortunately the rubber boots were taller. We found 4 birds: 2 up high, 1 lower, and 1 in the creek. There's so much cover on this property that it felt like we were searching for needles in a haystack. My shorthair found the first bird up high. Wonder mutt broke when I came along beside him; apparently he thinks "stay" is interchangeable with "okay." The bird flushed out from under a log and landed on a branch about 10 feet above the ground. I was contemplating whether to shoot it off the branch when it decided to fly across the hillside and right over my hunting companions' heads. They both unloaded their guns on the brown blur without success. The 4th and final bird of the hunt ended up flopping in the snow. The more experienced shorthair put an end to the flopping. The bird was a nice male with a rusty-colored ruff and tail-band.

Flew one bird Saturday with the puppy, he chased the bird after it took flight and nosed around where the bird was sitting. Took the old dog and my buddies dog out Sunday. We ended up flying two in a different area. Had one pointed but it got up as soon as we poked our heads over the bench and flew the wrong way so no shot. The other bird came up as we were finishing our hunt parked on the road, had the truck running loading up the dogs when it came out....oh well might make some little grouse next year.

Good looking pup and bird too! Looks like an old bird. I'm already missing next year. May take a few days off to hunt the end of the season
