Hitch, i appreciate you're feedback and i would like everyone's
    opinions on the matter.
Me personally, the places i hunt doesn't have the abundance
of cover as sounds like you do, pockets of pretty descent cover
i think in the (good ole days in Ky) there were several factors
    that came into play.
One these old hillsides in E.Ky that had been cleared in new
ground or pasture started to regenerate, in the hollers people in
the 50's& 60's started moving from E.Ky to Indiana, Michigan, and
Ohio in search of jobs, not to mention in the 20's & 30's the wide scale
logging that occurred in this part of the state
Not to mention, there were no coyotes, very few bobcats, no turkeys
not many coons unlike today, not many avian predator's unlike today
in my opinion on the turkeys there has to be an effect on the grouse
and I'm not convinced they didn't give them a disease.
So all this i think made a perfect environment to probably produce
the greatest grouse numbers no only in Ky but all of the Appalachian
    Mountains possibly ever.

Again,i appreciate the opinions "hitch", i know the question
of what's happened to the grouse in Ky is probably "old hat"
    on this site.
However, me personally, I haven't heard you're opinions on
the subject, so if it wouldn't be to much trouble, i would appreciate
    you're thoughts.

I grew up in South Central Ky and the fields and lands near where I grew up had a lot of grouse and woodcock. Nowhere to hunt anymore around there due to landhogs and treehuggers but reading these posts makes me wonder if there are any grouse left in that area.

this grouse laden state , put in 9hrs this
weekend, moved 1 bird, dog's never pointed
    so I didn't shoot.
How about you "hitch" are you still finding birds?

Who can grouse hunt? I stared at 16" of snow and ice for a week, now the monsoons come and it's 75 degrees. Might get the dogs out this week if it ain't a blizzard or a drought or something.

I was wondering, no grouse hunting for me either. I went to Nebraska pheasant hunting, we got 31 rooster by 11am one day and had to walk out of the field unloaded to not tempt anyone. We didn't even get in 2 days hunting and got 52 rooster and had to leave due to weather. Not grouse hunting and in wrong forum, but I thought you might find it interesting. I will get back out next weekend and hopefully hear a ghost. If a man can't go hunt a couple times a year what has he got?

He's a pretty good hunting buddy. I need to find the motivation to get back in the woods now that the snow is gone, maybe sunday.

Got the dogs out Thursday. Perfect day, overcast, 37F, no wind. Hunted a holler that held a couple of birds in Nov but some others threw some shots at them so they're probably goners. I got a dead knocker point on a woodcock from my younger dog. It flew low and fast and straight, like a midget grouse. May his kind reproduce and populate the woods someday. I hope he doesn't freeze out next week. He's about 3 weeks early.

Met Jon Dunn today, hunted today, and had a few beers. No birds but a good day.

I got out for 3 hours this afternoon. Had good dogwork, might have heard one fly way up on the top bench. This'll be the first year I've never took a bird home.

I'm in as good shape dogwise as I've ever been. Got a 6.5 yr and a 4.5, both doing well. Just have to wait for the trip North to get them some birds to work.

Finally returned to the woods after a couple of weeks away yesterday. Had 9 flushes over about 3.5 hours, and brought home one. The cover we hunted was basically empty of birds last year, but this year they've returned in decent numbers it appears.

This season has been refreshing as last year was so pitiful with regards to bird numbers. Hopefully this is a good sign of things to come, but honestly if we hadn't adjusted the places we are spending time we might not be finding much as traditional places flat out suck. The days of taking the easy way out and finding birds are long gone around here, the old strip pits etc are just a waste of time in General. I wish they produced but the cover basically sucks and has matured out past the point of being ideal.

Went the last two days in some prime cover, but looked to be a few weeks late. Nothing left for them to eat. Hit up a few spots that had Mountain Laurel and got some good points, saw sign, but no birds. Hard to find any forage right now.

Just curious but what types of food are you generally looking for?

what we find them eating this time of year is in abundant supply where we hunt and I'm curious what food sources you're seeking
