What did this

    Found this one the back side of my farm. This tree is probably 14-16 inches across and the bark is gone over 6 ft high. I am in Pendleton county. It doesn't look like a rub, more like it was chewed on.

    Looks like a dead ash tree an coons or possums or skunks are trying to get at the bugs

    I would have never dreamed a woodpecker would tear up a tree that bad. I was thinking there may be a bear in the area.

    When those elm trees die ,that’s the way they do.I just cut one and got a couple more that’s dead,limbs fall out ,bark peels off ,looks a lot like that.Ash is what I meant to say

    You wouldn’t be on the northeast side of the state would you? Neighbor in Pendleton County growing up swore he had a squach pickin at trees. Looked just like that. For what it’s worth he also used to drink rubbing alcohol when times were tough and he needed a fix. I’d guess coon or pecker

    Go to GOOGLE SEARCH type in pictures of dead Elm trees. You will find your answer there.
