Walked outside a few minutes ago and a gobbler was over about 200 yards in the woods gobbling his brains out.
Have no idea why, but I thought it was cool as heck..not a farm bird either as our nearest neighbor is a mile down the road.
I owl hooted and he doubled gobbled and triple gobbled his head off. Lol

Not abnormal at all for this time of year. Actually the bulk of the breeding is always done before season even gets here. That's why a lot of guys including myself in the past wish for a earlier season opener. Temps have nothing to do with the breeding cycle. They say it is brought on buy the length of the days not temp. The birds in my area have been doing there thing for a few weeks now. Rain snow or shine they don't seem to care.

Depends on what you mean by early? They are more vocal this time of year than they will be during turkey season where I hunt.

Pretty cool stuff thanks for answering my question.
Well where I will be the guys are lazy..lol if they can't get a ATV or four-wheel drive in there they won't go. That's why I like my area
Steep, rugged, nasty, mountains.either almost straight up or almost straight down. I will be all alone...with all those mountain gobblers to myself.

No my friend, lucky will be having a big bird fly off the roost straight into my Dakota Extreme decoys!

  7. Hell. Yesterday was the first day I got to hear morning roost gobbling. I normally start hearing birds the early part of March. Really has got me scratching my head.

I'm taking a trip over to my hunting area in the next few days and I'm hoping if I get there and get up the mountain about 15 minutes before daybreak I will hear some birds.
By the way, anyone here have any experience hunting mountain birds? And if so, would it be OK to ask a few questions?

Last Saturday morning, my wife heard birds gobbling all around.

It stormed here a couple of days ago, and every time it thundered, there was one bird that would gobble like crazy.

I was up early the other morning coyote hunting and didn't hear any.
Oh well, April 14th is turkey doomsday, or turkey hell for them, whichever you boys prefer.
