I've come to the conclusion that social media is to blame for decoy shy ducks. With the young folks coming into the sport it's all about the hero shot pile pic. Who cares how you got all them ducks, you just made all of your buddies jealous and they have to out do you. They can't call, or set up a good decoy spread, or hide well so the ducks won't commit. No problem, let's just get the extended range choke so we can hit them at 40-50 yards. A bunch of 8 comes in and on first pass and you shoot and maybe kill 1 and cripple 1. Now you've educated 6 birds. Can anyone change my mind on this?

I could kill a lot more ducks if I didn't want most of them feet down.

"I think they will finish. One more pass." Followed by.
    "We should've shot those."

I'm the same way! I start every day by saying "no should've shots today", but when I think the birds are responding well to the call, set up, and we have a good hide... I want them to back pedaling with their feet out!

I've been to the refuge and witnessed a pit shoot 100 rounds and kill 3 ducks. It was amazing.

Around here if you see 25 in a day then it was a good day so you take what you can get

There are many, many variables to why ducks don't work like they used to. Kids not knowing how to finish them is one.

Sure they can't just shoot worth a damn?

Got a fancy (to me) shotgun for Christmas and I looked to see where the closest skeet range was from the house...1.5 hrs. Hard for folks to practice when trap, skeet, and sporting clays places are few and far between.

Your not to far off. One of the biggest problems these kids have is they think they have to hi bawl every duck they see. Just depends what the birds want that particular day. I've had days they like the call and days where you rarely pick up a call. But these kids done bought them an rnt and by golly they're gonna make sure everyone in a 3 mile radius knows it.

Ducks are adapting and evolving. They’ve been getting progressively more paranoid for years.

I hunt with an older guy who can't hit the fast or high flyers.... We try to make em finish but often they don't...

Next year, If I have a new pup in training, I will shoot more of the higher birds.

when birds haven't moved in 5 weeks they are gonna be hard to do much with they know where they are safe and where they aint. but we have been having an above average year because one of the roost ponds apparently didn't get leased out this year so that is keeping the ducks around better than the last 4. If people did more scouting and less complaining they would likely kill more ducks. DU and facebook ruined the hunting.

1.25 hrs for us. I usually shoot twice a year and that's for work events.
