Ky hog killing ol timey way

    How many youuns have experienced this? I grew up scalding and scraping and cooking the liver on the fire on site. Good times!!

    Not done that since I was a kid. Helped Grouseassassin kill some this winter, but we skinned them. Gonna kill some more in a couple of months.

    Did it once that I can remember. I would love to take my son and help once. Be nice to bring a couple 200 pound meat hogs along to add to the fun. No comparing the meat that has been salted and cured. Man it was good eating

    Vaguely remember my grandfather doing this. My grandmother loved October. She got lots of lard to barter with. Seems like "neighbors" would help and got some hog for helping. It was sorta like a party.

    Geez, I wish I had paid attention to what was going on. More lost skills...

    Those cast iron kettles looked something like this--if I remember correctly. They seemed huge.

    The last he killed was back in the winter and he skinned rather than scald/scrape. He said he will skin them from now on. I remember when we gutted we would get the liver, put it in foil with salt pepper and put it in the coals. Mmmm, that was some good eating.

    When I was younger I couldn't wait for Hog killing time. All the farmers around used to bring their Hogs to one farm and everybody had a job to do. Had about 25 Hogs every year. Dad done the shooting and cutting their throat. One farmer used his tractor with boom pole to move them to scald box. That's where I worked. Scraping hair. Had guys gutting and cutting up meat. Miss those KRACKLINS.
