Any nuts on the trees this year? I haven't been in the woods yet. Noticed a beech in the edge of my sisters yard has several nuts on it, but that doesn't mean the ones in the timber do.

Dang, that's early for squirrels. I've never seen them cut before 10 August before. But 2 years ago I saw them cutting walnuts in August for the first time too.

On my property, I have a better mast crop over last year. The only thing is: I haven't seen very many Squirrels, but guess they will show-up, for this years' season.

I thought it was weird. I found fresh cuttings on a hickory tree Saturday. That seems WAY early to me.

Hickory and pignut are usually where I find them at the opening of the season. Maybe different in other areas?

They're starting on the hickories in the yard. Been on black oak acorns for a week or so and walnuts for longer than that.

In my area, Squirrels are cutting on pine cones. Although I have seen very few Squirrels so far, compared to sightings in past years around this time. Hope it changes as Squirrels are my favorite game to hunt.

Yep I don’t hunt them as much as I used to but pine early then hickories/pigs. We’ve tried to go once or twice early season the last few years and we’ll occasionally kill in an oak but pretty much all come out of hickory/pigs. We don’t have many pines.

I know this is a bit older thread but today is the first day I’ve been able to drive to the Scott Co woods we hunt. From what I could see it’s not a good nut year over there. Last year wasn’t either. More hickories and pigs than oaks but squirrels haven’t cut them as well by this time as they usually do?

  15. Cuttin shagbark hickories here. Nothin else so far. I have a ton of walnuts that are also loaded but so far they been ignoring them. We do have the best mast crop I have seen in about 4-5 yrs. That is GOOD.
